When we picked up our bengal we had a 2 hour drive home from the breeder's house. We were afraid of her needing to go potty during the drive too. We brought a small litter tray already filled with litter (same one the breeder used), a pooper scooper, a few plastic bags and some cleaning supplies. I think it's better to be safe than sorry. There's nothing wrong with being prepared. I'd say bring a litter tray, litter, scooper, and plastic bags at the very least. If you can avoid driving alone, it would make your life much easier because once you see your kitten beginning to scratch, you'll know you need to let it out of the carrier and into the litter tray. You'll be able to act faster if you are not alone during the drive.

Good idea to have everything ready, but I have driven quite long ways with cats 4 hours plus and none have ever needed to use the litter tray, completely dry and mess free. I have a small puppy cage with the litter tray in it and when I stop I have transferred them into it, but nothing has ever happened. I prefer to have them confined in the cage, in case they end up under the seat, or out the car door etc etc.

I have however driven the 4 miles to the vets to find the bottom of the carrier completely saturated, or worse.

I would, if I were you, be prepared for the worse case scenario.

I'd just get a large carrier and not worry about stopping. You can put a small litter try in there with him, but he may be too scared to bother with it. :/

I had a 4/5 hour drive home with my boy too, when I first got him. All I heard were ear piercing yowls THE ENTIRE WAY BACK, but that was the worse of it. Every time I'd pet him he'd purr, but would keep up with that maowing. GAAAAH.

I've also made a cross country trip twice with three cats in tow, and will do it again later this year. Five hours is nothing in comparison to that!

I simply used LARGE carriers (where they really had a lot of room), and bought a lot of towels. If they used the bathroom inside the carrier, I'd stop, throw away the towel, disinfect and dry the carrier if it got dirty at all (while letting the kitty run around the van - with the doors LOCKED!), put in the fresh towel, put kitty back - then went off on my way!

There were only two incidents total between the three cats for the entire last trip. Otherwise they held it til we stopped at a hotel each night. Such good kitties.
