Hey all,

Can everyone calm down about this topic a bit? It's getting a bit heated and we're supposed to be a friendly bunch :?

I think you've all got valid points.

Elsa, I agree completely with you that some traits can't always be trained out of animals - the dog example is a good one, some dogs will always revert to type and you could never leave them with other pets however much you've handled them and trained them from birth (I can think of two horror stories of much-loved dogs who have savaged rabbits or guinea pigs after living in the same households for many years - in once case tearing a hutch apart with their teeth - a bit of a dramatic tale, but true!).

I guess the thing to bear in mind is that whilst taking on a truly wild animal is a fantastic thing to do if it ensures the survival of that animal, but it's not to be undertaken lightly and in the back of your mind you have to remember that it will always be wild, no matter how hand-reared. This is presumably why some early generation Bengals aren't suitable to keep as pets. My boys' breeder had an early generation queen who was stunning but could only be handled by the breeder herself. Even she had to be extremely careful with her, especially when she had kittens.

We all want a bit of that wildness in our cats, and that's why we own Bengals - but I am quite glad that my two won't be getting too much bigger as the damage they can inflict if I'm not fast enough with a toy dangled in front of them is quite enough for me to handle! Taking on a true wild cat needs a lot of dedication but presumably a certain amount of healthy caution as well.....

Best wishes

Teresa

Hi,

Thanks Teresa, you outlined exactly the point I was trying to make. In no way would I like to see Chuie put down, I only questioned his future as a lap-cat not as an individual.
I just think it is naive to think that Chuie, will always be the lovable kitten he is.

We would all like to be surrounded by wild animals, lions in the living room, cheetahs on the lawn, but the reality is that they are exactly that "wild predators" and cannot be treated long-term like lap-dogs/lap-cats, they are far too big and powerful for that. I know Chuie is not as big as those large cats but as Teresa says her breeder's foundation is a one person cat and even she has to handle her carefully (most foundations are bottle-fed as kittens). Chuie will be three times larger than any foundation or Bengal.

There are always exceptions to the rule but Chuie is not old enough for us to assume that he is one of those.

Elsa

Ok Elsa

Its pointless me continuing this debate with you because as usual there is only one opinion that is correct, your own, and I know how you like to have the last word. Chuie may not be old enough that we can predict the future, but you have not even met him (or any other serval as far as I can see) therefore you opinion does not carry any great weight with me.

I 100% trust the people rearing Chuie to understand him better than anyone and provide for his future needs - whatever they may be.

I will not even get into the topic of early generation/foundation cats as it would be wasted effort. Enough from me.

Not sure if I dare voice my opinion on this matter but that’s what the forum is for so here goes……

I think by reading this post everyone is reading into other peoples comments to much and taking them in the wrong contexts ………please don’t attack me for saying this.

I do not think Elsa was criticising Chuie’s owners Pauline and Frank one bit I think she was trying to say (correct me if I am wrong which I think someone will) She was saying you cant judge Chuie’s behaviour as an adult at the moment and to be honest in all reality you cant.

You cant judge the future of anyone’s or any animal’s behaviour, you can only go on past evidence and knowledge. I am sure that Chuie is being extremely looked after and with out Pauline and Frank which I can see on the pictures and he is such a stunner and without them he would not be here.

I believe Elsa was talking in general and just asking and contemplating what his future will be like in a home environment and no one can judge that until the time arrives.

Chuie could be the same as he is now a loving Serval, however, as an adult he might not and no one can turn round and say he will be either until the time arrives.

This is just my opinion after reading through everyones comments, this is not a statement or a nasty attack on the owners of Chuie before I am shouted at.

All smile :D

all i have to say is that you can say that about everyone that as just aquired a new puppy as we also dont know which of these puppies will, if any grow up to kill or maim some innocent child or person but how many cats have you really heard about in this country that have caused great injury to anyone. well bet there is thousands that could tell a tale of the cute little puppies that have caused lots of viscious attacks most of which are left to roam the streets so think it is fair to say that alot of the critism is caused by jealousy. but adding to that i thought i would also like to say that this weekend gone, chuie is now living in his huge purpose built pen outside with his pals and will not now be living inside of paulines house so lets not get into arguments over his welfare as all it comes down to really is that chuies life was saved and all thanks should go to pauline and frank who have now given him a home that will be as good as any zoo but just a little more personal love from two dedicated cat lovers. now if you think what heated discussion this causes between cat lovers what chance would pauline and frank have with normal none cat fanciers. so surely all us cat lovers should stick together and help and support each other not put doubt into others thoughts.

You still seem to think people are having a go at Chuie’s owners Pauline and Frank and we are not.

I am so happy Chuie is in a great home and so is everyone else that has posted it seems to me.

I agree what you say about more dogs attack then cats but like i said before you cant judge the future of any cat, dog, human.

I love cats and love the fact Chuie has been given the chance to survive in a better place than a zoo.

I for one never said Chuie wasnt cared for or happy but you seem to keep going on as if people are saying that and they arent.
