Really dangerous to be driving with a cat loose in the car though. Ouch, I wouldn't recommend that.

Oh yea, why’s that? Is that your opinion for ANY pet (dogs included) or just cats?

I didn't even notice the cat in the passenger seat. That is quite dangerous. Imagine if you had to stop quickly to avoid a collision and your baby was tossed all about the car. Or ... you are in an accident and when you open the door, the kitty escapes as it is terrified of what just happened. Note, too, the air bag could cause an issue. A cat should always be secured in a carrier. Honestly, if you think "It could never happen to me," it happens ALL the time as I am part of many Facebook pages for lost and found pets and you cannot imagine how many are lost after a car accident. I know some cat owners love having their cats accompany them in the passenger seat -- but many do not stay there and can get under your feet which does not allow you to hit the brakes or release the gas pedal. It is just plain dangerous, no matter how you look at it.

Dogs -- well, they should be secured as well, but at least most of them have a leash on them and there are things on the market that will secure a large dog in your car. Smaller dogs should be placed in a carrier.

Yes, this is just my opinion .... but it is a common sense opinion. You have a beautiful baby. Please don't take the chance of losing her.

The other issue with having a cat loose in the car as Sherry mentions is that if she gets down by your feet. Playing with your foot while it's on the accelerator could have an autobahn effect and the only way to get her away from it is to take your eyes off the road. Alternatively if she gets in behind the brake pedal and you have to stop suddenly, it isn't going to end well.

There is just too many things that a cat can interact with in a car that doesn't go well like bumping the shifter into neutral or reverse at highway speeds ( and no, reverse doesn't do anything different than neutral at forward speed ). She could also play with your keys which may have unpredictable results.

He looks pretty cool, perching high up for a curious look. I guess its pretty safe as cats would normally be more distracted by the moving scenes outside.

I noticed a friend of mine likes to let loose his cat in his car too and it seems to be always looking out the windscreen. But personally, I wouldn't date try that on my cat, lol.

To be on the safe side, at least I think, he should be on a harness with travel restraint and secured to a proper anchorage point. I am sounding like a construction site Safety Officer, lol.

No, Chris, you are absolutely correct. There are so may "traffic" situations -- and you just never know when you may need to slam on your brakes to avoid a problem. You have your seatbelt on -- your cat has nothing and getting slammed up against something could be fatal, plus in the event of an actual accident, the air bag could go off -- literally killing your cat. The odds may be small, but they are odds just the same.
