Hi yall, i recently purchased an almost 6 month old bengal kitten. Its been a week and she still hasnt allowed me to stroke her. Whenever she sees my hands, she'd just bolt. But she does come out from wherever shes hiding to eat, play, use the litter or just go around the room where ive been keeping her. And whenever im in the room, she'd stay close by. Is this looking like she'd be one of those that didnt like to be touched? I am admittedly jealous of those people who have very affectionate bengals and can just touch them whenever they like.

Give her time, a week is not that long. Just be around her for a while and let her take the initiative to come to you. Most cats take weeks to get used to new surroundings and new people so you can't say much about her character at this point.

She is 6 months old, did you get her from a breeder at this age or was she rehomed? Her past might say a lot about her current behaviour as well. If she has been around people all her life she will be fine soon, otherwise it might take longer. Just let her get to know you and her new home at her own pace.

Welcome to our forum and congratulations on your bengal. This behavior is completely normal. She is stressed out going to a new environment with a new human, new smells -- and if you have other pets -- dealing with them. I know you are anxious to handle her -- but give her some time and space. She will come to you when she is ready. Obviously, you are feeding her and that is a moment to pet her gently. If she is laying somewhere, you can sit close by and talk softly to her. Considering the number of years you will have with this precious kitty, giving her space for a few weeks will be nothing. You could be using wand toys to engage her in play. Buy some treats and feed her a few. She will learn that all good things are associated with you. She just needs her confidence and that comes with getting used to her surroundings. She may not like loud noise or a lot of activity. Make sure you have a tall cat tree for her and lots of sleeping places.

If you will be patient, you will be rewarded. So ... keep us updated.

My rescue was about that age and it took him a long time to form around... Probably 9 months before I could briefly touch him but after a few years he loved to be petted and cuddle (not a lap cat though).

My first Bengal always loved to be petted but never sat on laps until she was 7 years old and then loved laps so goes to show you just never know.

I doubt it will take you nearly as long as with my rescue but just be patient as it can take a lot longer than we perceive it should.

I find the best way to bond with a new cat is through play as it builds their confidence.

Just be patient and gentle. It is highly possible she was not socialized at the breeder, but that doesn't mean she won't come around to you. Trust is a huge thing with cats and once a cat trusts you, their love is unwavering. You'll be taking baby steps with her -- but don't give up.

You may also try the "slow blink" with her. When she is looking at you, give her a slow blink. If she returns the blink -- success!!! That's usually how Jackson Galaxy does it with any new cat he meets on his show "My Cat From Hell." He also brings treats!!! If she is taking treats out of your hand, that is a huge step in the right direction.

Patience and time, patience and time!!!

Based on my prior experiences, if she came from a loving home the process of adjusting to a new place will be longer and more difficult. She has to go through a grieving process first.
