My two boys are 3,5 months old now and I'd like to try clicker training with them. But how do you start this with two kittens?

Training two at the same time obviously results in chaos. When one is paying attention the other is jumping him to play. I know I need to seperate them for the training but this is not easy either as they are used to doing everything together. When you see one the other is always nearby. When they lose sight of each other they start calling and they respond immediately and come running to find the other.

When I take one in a seperate room the other will sit at the door crying. Not the best thing for concentration either!

I now try to do a few short sessions a day for the two of them, trying to work around the chaos. They do respond to the clicker and treats if I get them to sit still for a few seconds.

Any tips? Should I just wait till they are a bit older and less playful? That would be a shame as they really like to learn new things and it's a fun way to bond. I teach simple things like sit and follow target.

I have never understood the reason for clicker training! It's a behavioral thing -- like circus animals. I wouldn't dream of trying it with Raiden. We do have Mystic on here who is a well-trained bengal and does amazing tricks. I guess it is fun to try -- but really, what is the point? To show off to friends that you have a trained cat who can jump through a hoop, stand on its hind legs, twirl around in a circle? I'm guessing if you want the clicker training to work, you have to work with them individually. I'm guessing they are a tad young at this point and would wait a while longer. It takes a lot of patience and repetition so I hope you're up for it!

I don't believe any clicker training is going to work outdoors! Although, yesterday Raiden bounded through the front door as i was bringing the Chewy box in and he stopped halfway down the front steps and looked back. I dropped the box and grabbed the bag of treats and shook them. He finally decided to come back in on his own. But ... when a cat sees a distraction while outside, there is no hope. A bird, a squirrel, something rustling underground (like moles), I am sorry to say, you cannot control a cat unless it is on a leash. Even my other kitty who is so good at following me when I call him -- he gets distracted by open garages and rustling sounds in bushes. I'd be really careful.

Cats are cats, and as much as I would love to, I'm just not into changing their behaviors unless they are doing something bad. But, everyone is different and from videos I have seen on clicker training, the human and cat seem to enjoy it. I truly hope it works out for you, but please do not take them outside without a harness and leash. One member here lost one of her bengals, even on a leash, when the cat got scared and bounded away and pulled the leash out her hand. The cat was killed by car.

I think I didn't explain well enough but by taking them outside I did mean on a leash, taking a stroller as well. I wouldn't do it any other way.

I've heard behaviorists say that clicker training cats is one of the best bonding activities that you can do, as well as it being an excellent activity going forward. So I admire those that do it. I briefly gave it a try when the bengals were young. It was kind of a debacle  Like the OP said, it would always go something like: get one cat into a room by herself. Try to some clicker training, with the other bengal screaming outside the door, putting paws under the door etc. It became clear that for my two sisters, at the time, it was actually kind of stressful to them, being apart from their sister, and just way more fun for them to wrestle with each other or chase a bird around. So I gave up on the training.

I'm sure there's probably a really good way to do it with two, but I sure didn't and don't know how, so I can't help. Good luck though. And if you have any successes, please post them.

I am happy to hear yours will not go outside without a harness and leash! A stroller is a great idea as well. Anything to give them fresh air.

I know there are YouTube videos out there on clicker training and you can go into the gallery and watch Mystic do all the best tricks. I just do not have the patience for something like that. It takes repetition and treats over and over again to condition a cat. If clicker training were such a good idea, it would come with all the other instructions on how to take care of your cat. LOL

Hi, so I have a brother and sister pair. They're about 10 months now and can "do a turn", go "up" on their hind legs and paw up my leg as a say "come up". Honestly, it was so easy to teach them this. I didn't use a clicker I just used treats. I only feed them freeze dried meat so they are always pretty excited and will even start doing their tricks before I say anything! I also have them "do a turn" before they eat.

My only secret really is that when I'm training them a new trick I do it for about 5 minutes every other day or so for 2 weeks maybe. I say their specific name and will hold the treat very close to them so the other knows it's not his/her turn.

I hope this helps!!
