My breeder has scheduled my boy for his neuter on Nov 2nd. He'll be 11 weeks on that date. She told me I could pick him up the next day if I waawant, but would it be better to wait until the 9th when he is 12 weeks? Of course I want to get him ASAP, but I want to do right by him.

Quasar was neutered at 10-11 weeks of age. I didn't pick him up until he was 13 weeks old. I was worried I would miss all his kitten hood but I would leave another kitten that long again in a heartbeat! He was the best socialized and most confident kitten I have ever had and, at 5 1/2 years old, he retains much of his kittenish behavior.

Good luck with your new charge!

Here's how I see it:

* The breeder wants you to take him early, because she gets money sooner and who wants to deal with a bengal coming out of surgery?
* For the kitty, clearly it's going to be better for him to return to the cattery, and just have healing up to deal with, without the extra stress of a rehoming on top of it. Plus he gets a couple more weeks with his mom and siblings. Extra socialization, extra time for his immune system to develop etc.
* For you, why would you want to take him right out of surgery? It's just too much. Re-homing is difficult enough, without doubling down on his misery.

Wait 2 more weeks is my advice.

That's what I was leaning towards. She's willing to keep him as long as I'd like, she just told me she'd be fine with me picking him up after that. She said that boys usually recover quickly but that if I'd reserved a female she keeps them longer. I've never had a kitten, much less a fresh out of surgery one, so if he's going to be miserable I want him where he's comfortable. We're about two and a half hours away as is, so I don't think he's going to have a fun time coming home regardless of his neuter.

First of all, a kitten who has just been neutered does need 48 to 72 hours for recovery. You do not want to add the stress of picking him up and bringing him into a completely new environment. I would definitely ask the breeder to keep him one extra week until he is 12 weeks old. I realize SHE will have to deal with the recovery (many vets prescribe pain pills after neutering), but you will at least receive a healed kitten.

Can't wait to see pictures.

No worries, the breeder is willing to keep him for as long as I like, she just mentioned she was fine any time after that date. He's going to be a spoiled little baby.

He's seven weeks here, we're going to call him Puck. Look at his little eyebrows!

Such a pretty baby! Looks like he is exactly the same age as mine (born august 16). I am visiting the breeder today and will take pictures. I will be allowed to take them home at 13 weeks.

Puck was born the 17th! Almost identical. I'm glad for the extra time anyway, I still have a whole lot of things I need to buy him. I haven't had a cat in five years, and I didn't have any cat things any more. Slowly picking up the necessities and trying to avoid from going over budget on toys... mostly unsuccessfully but of course I don't know what his favorites are yet... Going to take off as much time from work as I can to bond with him at first and watch him get into trouble. :D
