i have a kitten here who is 10 weeks old. i'm currently getting him used to wearing his harness ready for when he leaves home at 13 weeks.

the first time i put it on he tried to bite it a few times, got bored of it & carried on playing. i think if you put it on & distract them with toys, they hardly even notice it's there. it only takes a couple of goes before they are comfortable with it.

each cat is different, play it by ear but make it fun & give lots of praise so your kitten doesn't relate it to stress

I put my two in a Harness for the first time on the weekend. Both didn't mind the harness (given thet are both 1 year old I was pleasantly surprised!) but Khaan got spooked on his first time outdoors and now whenever I take him out he just meows pitifully and hides in a bush or between my legs. I tried to play with him, stroke him to reassure him etc. but he just lays down and refuses to budge! I don't want to upset but how can I get his confidence back? Any suggestions greatly welcomed

Perhaps he is trying to tell you that he does not want to be an outdoors cat and would much prefer to stop in the home

Maybe you're right. He's a really sensitive boy and if anything upsets him just once he'll go to any length to avoid the trigger again no matter how trivial it may seem to us. I don't think he's very happy with me at all for taking him outdoors as he's been ignoring me ever since!! A cat that has attitude heh!

I first put Gucci in a harness at about 4-5months old and she wasn't having any of it. She would sit and refuse to move for the first few times and then wriggled around meowing. So i put it on her once a day for an hour or so til she started moving around and getting used to it. She soon forgot all about it and seemed ok-ish with wearing it.
I took her outside on a lead a couple weeks later, though she barely moved and took me a bit of gentle tugging to get her to shift a few inches, she seemed to love the outdoors. Now that shes been outside a few times she constantly wants to get outside whenever shes indoors (shes a house cat) and tries to squeeze through tiny window gaps, and meows....alot.
Even now though, 4weeks later, she still doesnt move much when on the lead. So i dont take her out much.

Any tips??

My 3 love going out on their harnesses. I'm currently "training" my 6 month old Snowshoe with the harness on indoors for short amounts of time...I'm going to have to work on some more distractions as she was determined to get it off lol but then all of them started off like that. Now they can't wait to get out of the door! Every time I open the front door my youngest Bengal swipes her paws at the latch - I'm sure one day she will open that door lol

We use Walking jackets instead of harnesses and the benglies really seem to prefer them, they are quite hard to get hold of (the jackets not the benglies ) but a lovely lady who breeds made all ours.
