Hi, brand new to the forum. My fiancee and I want to get a companion for our 2 year old male F5 savannah. We were thinking of getting a bengal kitten. We are considering buying from Anjou Bengals (in NJ). We haven't really found much online that would suggest a bengal and smaller savannah would not be compatible, but figured there'd be more valuable guidance here.

We welcome any suggestions, comments, etc. regarding our idea and any info/reviews of the breeder/cattery. Thank you.

To me it seems really unwise. The size difference alone between an adult savannah and a bengal kitten is just crazy. The bengal would barely be a bite-sized morsel for the savannah. And I would be just as worried when the bengal becomes an adult. Again, too big a size difference and too wild. I doubt you could even break them up should they get into a serious fight before tragedy would occur. Don't do it is my advice.

Welcome to our forum. I have not read up on posts from those who have two savannah cats since this is basically a bengal forum. I'm sure there may be forums for savannah owners. The only thing I know is there was an episode of My Cat From Hell regarding TWO problem savannahs.

A savannah will weigh up to 30 pounds and is a much larger cat than a bengal (who may weigh half that much) -- the African Serval is a much larger cat than the Asian Leopard Cat. That being said -- your best bet may be to get another Savannah and not a bengal. There will definitely be a size difference. I don't know enough about savannah cats to honestly give you an opinion, but if it were me .... I would not mix the breeds.

Thank you for the reply. There was a typo in my initial post, our f5 is 3 years old and has been at a the lower end of the weight range for a male F5 savannah at 14 lbs for a little over a year now.

From what I've read that weight is within the normal range for a male bengal. I was wondering that would factor into the size differential or would it also be frowned upon to get a bengal kitten if one already has an adult male bengal?

Bengal kitten and bengal adult are one mix. There is always the potential when you add another cat, regardless of the breed, that these cats will NOT get along no matter what!!! Naturally, the opposite may occur and does most of the time. Can't count the number of posts here with aggression issues between two cats. Many owners feel adding a cat for a companion to their existing cat is a good idea. Know that two cats will chase each other. My two move furniture around, practically knock lamps off the end tables. Life is easier when the moggie is sleeping or outside. They also eat twice the amount of food, require twice of the amount of play time, and double the vet costs.

However, the choice is yours. You know your Savannah better than anybody. As long as you have patience and take time introducing them and you feel you can handle any consequences, go for it.

It might be worth contacting the lovely lady who has the youtube channel "TecSpot". She has an Asian Leopard Cat with which she breeds bengals, but she has recently also started breeding f1 Savannah's. As she deals with both breeds in their 'as close to wild as it gets, without being actually wild' forms (ie f1s and f2 of both bengals and savannahs) shes perfect person to ask!

Update: After much asditional research we did get a male bengal kitten which is now nearing 6 months of age. Outside of some periods when the bengal kitten is the antagonist during which he wants to spare and our savannah wants no part and will find a high point to "escape" the situation they are getting along quite well. Our savannah is a f6 not f5 (I'm not the cat person, my fiancee is).

Well, you have had six months to get these two to co-exist. Actually 14 pounds is small for a savannah and many male bengals don't reach that weight. Mine is currently 10.5 pounds. While the F generation is not a huge deal to most people, an F6 will have less wild blood than an F5. Having two hybrids means having a lot of catification going on in your home as they both can be crazy cats at times. Bless you for taking on the challenge. I'm sure they are stunning kitties and so much fun to observe.
