Hi all. He is a rescue cat that I got in February and is almost two years old (October). At that time he weighed 11.5 pounds and at the first vet trip the vet said he has a heart murmur and the best course of action was to keep him lean. He is a great cat except for his love to chase and/or sneak attack the dog (a Papillon) which the dog hates and therefore hates the dog.

In the morning and late afternoon he gets one small can of Beyond Grain Free wet food (85 g each feeding total 17 g) at noon he gets 28 g of dry food - also grain free. He constantly begs for more food, but his weight is up to 12.2 pound and I am worried about him becoming overweight.

I have seen that some leave dry available all day.

Any suggestions?

Maybe I'm just not used to being yelled at all the time :)

Not always yelled at but when I am in the kitchen it is constant reminders to "feed me".

The Beyond food line has a good grain free dry variety. It couldn't hurt to give him a small amount of that and see if he feels more satisfied.

Also, the Temptations treats are low calorie, so you can give him a good amount of those too.

The dry food that he does get is Beyond grain free.

In my original post I said 17 g total wet food, but it should be 170 g wet food daily - 2 cans at 85 g each.

He looks fine to me - definitely on the leaner side. Any thinner and he would be underweight imo.

Male bengals weigh 12 to 15 pounds. Some go as high as 20. From the pictures, your kitty is lean and mean! Bengals are long and lean cats and even 12 pounds could not be overweight for an adult bengal. Mine weighs 11 pounds and the vet thinks he is underweight as he normally weighs about 13. We have no idea why he has lost weight -- but at least he has stabilized at 11 pounds. Know, too, that many cats are grazers (like mine) who prefer eating 8 to 9 times a day. My other regular kitty eats 4 times a day.

Oh, and my bengal has a grade 3 heart murmur and the vet has never thought it to be a problem connected to weight. I would not keep my cat particularly thin for that reason.

I think the vet was just saying that lean is better than obese as obese puts an unmecessary strain on the heart, not that there is a connection between weight and the murmur.

Oh and at 12.5 now he is still solid - a lot heavier than he looks!

Yea, he looks real lean, so you probably just want to maintain that weight that he is at right now. Maybe a lb or two more wouldn't hurt him. You can weigh him every Month or so.

The "grain free"-ness of food isn't really important. For dry food that doesn't have grain, they'll have things like potato, or fruits or veggies, which aren't thought to be any better for your cat. But on the other hand, what you are doing seems to be working ok for you.

The main way you tell if a cat is on weight is by feel, so the next time you see your vet he should do a hands on check of that for you. But I also think that 12 pounds is on the low end for Bengal. Bengals carry a lot of muscle and they have dense bones.
