Safe Age Ranges for Cat and Dog Spay/Neuter Surgery
When it comes to having a cat or dog spayed/neutered, a frequent question we're asked is "how old is too old to have this procedure done?" Ideally, all pets would have this surgery done at a young age (preferably around six months or sooner) so that there is no risk of unwanted litters or adverse health effects later in life. However, there are many reasons as to why a pet may not be spayed or neutered earlier in life, such as having been a stray or feral.
Specific age ranges for safe spay and neuter can vary based on the type of pet and individual factors, which is why we always recommend a consultation with our vet for pet owners who are wanting to have an older pet spayed or neutered. In most cases, senior dogs and cats between seven and eight years of age can be safely spayed or neutered. However, it is important that diagnostic testing is done to ensure that your pet is healthy enough to have the surgery, as some medical conditions (such as kidney disease or high blood glucose levels) could make the surgery too dangerous, especially when it comes to anesthesia. Furthermore, older pets who already have been diagnosed with reproductive health problems (such as ovarian cancer) may not be recommended for a spay or neuter.
