Hello!
I have a kitten arriving in a month, have been up to see her at 5 and 8 weeks. Can't wait to have her in my place, have been reading up to get prepared. Bengals seem to be the one of the few types of cat I'm not allergic to.

I'm suprised there hasn't been a Kirjava, though I'm sure there's an Iorek somewhere!

You can't imagine what it's like to have a Bengal till you have one... you'll be hooked, obsessed, madly in love and can't get enough.

So I picked her up today!
She handled the taxi and train pretty well, though was clearly terrified, and now she's slowly gathering herself. Took her out of the carrier to show her the litter box and water, and then put her back in, waiting for her to wander out on her own.
My voice seems to have calmed her a lot, but she seems a bit away from exploring beyond the carrier.

First hour, she's utterly terrified:

Is it normal for her breathing rate to be 80-120 breaths a minute? I know she's stressed so will be near hyperventilating, but seems a little high.

She is gorgeous.

Go easy with your expectations in these first days, they are stressful for a kitten - everything that she has known has changed and she no longer has her mum and siblings around for comfort.

Keep her in a safe room, give her time to feel safe in there and let her explore the rest of the house when she is comfortable with that room.

I just bought my Aiko home last weekend. She was shaking and breathing very heavy in the carrier to begin with.
It took her 7 hours once home to venture out of the carrier, i had been sitting at the computer in her safe room during that period and she moved to the chair i had been on.
From there she moved to a closed egg shaped bed i got for her and basically stayed in there most of the next day. She hadnt eaten at this point either. Later that afternoon i went in and sat at the computer again and i was just singing, we also opened the door to the safe room and left it open a bit.
She finally came out and ate and whilst still shy, she eventually came out and sat on the couch with us that night.
It was a rough couple of days for all involved but we are nearly a week in now and she is a playful little terror who absolutely adores cuddles :)

Just be patient, you'll both get there :)

Congratulations on bringing her home. What a beautiful baby! Hang in there. She is extremely stressed out right now, but things will get better. Let her explore on her own as she feels more confident. Talk to her in a soothing voice. Make sure she can see you. Do not continuously approach her. A pet now and then is fine. Breathing heavy is a sign of stress. She's undergone a huge change now .. but I guarantee you in just a matter of days, she will be running all over the place.

Very cute kitty, and I'm glad that she's coming out of her shell. But regarding the food, this is day 3, so if it were me, I'd probably take her into the vet today. It's a good thing to do the first week regardless, but she really needs to be eating (and more importantly drinking) asap. Have you left water out for her? I'd probably be worrying about illness at this point.
