What do I do when I bring him into the house? He will travel by car in a carrier. Then I bring him into the house and just let him out? I've read he should be in his own sanctuary room with his litter pan, water, and a cat tree tower to climb on. How long do we keep him in there?
I just am unsure what to do when I first bring him into his new home.

HELP!

If I were you, I would prepare a room for him, just with litter tray, food, water, bed and a few toys, and leave him to it for a little while to acclimatise and adjust the new smells etc. After a little while, I would go in, check on him, if he's inquisitive then I'd let him out and follow his lead - some are super shy and nervous, and others want to explore! Follow his lead, and enjoy your new baby :)

Welcome to our forum. First of all, calm down. It is best to keep your kitten in a "safe room". Most kittens are stressed out from leaving their mom and siblings and coming into a new home with new people and new smells, so having the kitten in a smaller, self-contained area is best. Your baby needs to decompress, so to speak. It is common for a scared baby to want to hide. If you have a spare bathroom or bedroom, they work the best. By all means, spend time with your kitty, play with it. Know that some kittens are just fine and can roam around your home (and yours will inspect everything). It really depends on the kitten, so you will simply have to play it by ear. If you have a fairly quiet household with no kids or no other pets, then the little one may be fine. If you have children who will be shrieking over the kitten and you have a dog and other cats, then the new arrival may be frightened to death.

Just make sure your bengal proof your home! Cats can get into everything. And, congratulations!!!

Pretty much any book on cats will have a chapter on how to handle bringing home a kitten for the first time. Most magazines have "kitten issues" too, and it's usually easy to buy back issues. If you have an ipad, you could have kitten issues of your favorite magazines on your tablet in minutes.

Two magazines I recommend:
http://www.bengalsillustrated.com/
http://subscribe.catster.com//

I did a quickie google search, and this was the best I could find on the web in a few minutes of looking:
http://darkmoonbengals.com/dkbengals/preparation/

Not my favorite article on this by a long shot, but not horrible either. Things that I don't agree with them on:
* a spare bedroom is the ideal place for a "saferoom" for a kitten. I would not keep a kitten in a laundryroom unless it is the very last resort.
* We know from hearing from many many many new bengal kitten owners, that a really high percentage of the time that loose stools are *not* attributable to something they ate, but rather a parasite. If your kitten has diarrhea, especially the really foul smelling kind, and it stays around, take that seriously and see a vet (after reading about TF here on the forum).

Other stuff:
* Consider pet insurance now. Once your cat starts having problems, it will be too late to do it then (because of pre-existing conditions clauses).
* Catify, catify, catify. Jackson Galaxy has written 2 books on it. Giving your bengal things to climb is a great way to showcase their athleticism, and keep them fit and happy. I'd give your bengal kitten a nice tall tree right of the bat. You'll be amazed how quickly he climbs to the top.
* Research bengal-approved toys. From personal experience, the wand toys like dabird, flying frenzy, and neko flies are wonderful for bengals.
* Nothing greases the wheels quite like high-quality treats. Good treats are things like freeze dried meats (with no additives, fortunately they sell them at pretty much any pet store these days), or even deli meat (chicken and turkey are preferred).
* The "My Cat From Hell" tv program really is a great resource for new and experienced cat owners alike (and a new season starts in a couple of weeks... yay!).

There are soooo many in-depth discussions on this forum about bringing kittens home. Take some time to read and search, you'll find lots of great reading.

The biggest "gotchas":
* Bengals are not like other cats. Many people get bengals because they love the look, and then expect a ragdoll personality. You never know, but odds are definitely against that happening. Bengals are little terrors. They'll entertain you, they'll adore you, but mostly they want a play-buddy more so than a cuddle-buddy.

* Lots of scratching and biting initially. It's normal, expect it, deal with it, and don't hold it against him. Lots of discussion on that here on the forums too. That's just a heads up though... and they grow out of it!

Insurance is a good call. Get it now.

Babbage has a poorly tummy and a possible heart murmur at his first checkup - anything to do with his digestive tract/heart are now excluded from the policy for life.
