Hey everyone,

Miko just got his neuter done this morning, it was an all round stressful event for me as we did not know how his heart would react to the anesthetics (he has a murmur, grade 2 or 3). Anyways, hopefully it's not too early to say, but it all went well. He's at home resting now. I did not get the greatest experience at the vet's, however, but that is a story for another time. I'm just happy Miko is healthy and got through the neuter without any complications! :)

Anyways, Miko was sent home with some pain medication (Metacam- oral dose - 3mL/day for 3 days). At first, I didn't think much of it, but after doing a little bit of research on Metacam, I am getting lots of mixed reviews as to whether it is safe to use on cats.

My question is this: Did your cat need pain meds after their spay or neuter? I'd rather not give him pain meds if he doesn't need it.

Also, what are some signs that would tell me he's in pain?

Mine are all female, so different procedure, but no, none of them were given *extra* pain meds to be adminstered after the procedure. I think they were pretty well hopped up on pain meds when they were sent home however.

Signs of pain? Similar to illness really. Reclusiveness, lack of energy, lack of appetite, eye dilatation, excessive licking/grooming. Also of course behaviors that are specific to the region that is hurting them.

Bryan was already neutered when he came to me, but my DSH Max was done at 6 months old. He didn't have any extra pain meds and was fine. He was a bit woosy for a while and vomited the small amount of food I gave him. He was completely back to his normal self by the following morning, eating and playing. Although I was pretty careful to make sure he wasn't jumping from great heights and that his play time didn't get too boisterous with Bryan for a couple of days.

The one male I had neutered (vaccinated, microchipped) came home with three blue pain pills. Had no issues with them except two weeks later, the cat vanished without a trace.

Pearl had it for 4 days after her spay but Magic never had it after he was neutered, I don't really think the males need it as it's a really small operation.

Diesel had Metacam after his ACL surgery - that was a pretty major repair and painful from what the vet said. Anyway, he was on it for 3 or 4 days with no issues.

When he was neutered he didn't need any pain meds. He was his normal self the minute we got him home. You never would have known he had surgery.

I had my male six month old cat neutered on Monday also. No pain pills were given, he was a bit woozy that day but by this morning he was fine. Not jumping really high today yet....taking it more step-by-step. I did notice some blood tinged discharge on the sheets I have on his bed. The neuter Area seems to be fine. I'm sure it was just some sort of discharge overnight. Does not seem uncomfortable at all. Vet did not recommend any medication. A neuter is a pretty simple procedure. I'm fairly certain that every cat is different. But I don't understand giving medication unless it's really needed. And it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know if your cat is in pain.... simply watching and observing should tell the tale.

I notice a change in him already! Which I'm very happy about. My other neutered male that is two years old seems to be happier also. Just can't explain it, it's like the little one is no longer dominant. My two-year-old has been running wild and crazy, and acting like I've never seen him act before.

Thanks for all the messages. Miko is recovering well so far. He was neutered Monday morning and its Wednesday night now.

Another question: How long until I should play with him as usual? He tends to get pretty crazy when it's play time and the toys are out, so I haven't played at all with him except throwing a ball or spring around a few times.

Honestly, Miko should be fine. If he wants to play that's a good sign.
