I have sad news to report - my Bengal Mix Thomas, who you have welcomed to this forum with much love, was diagnosed with cancer of the lymph nodes this week. I rushed him to Friendship Animal Hospital (Washington, DC) on Thursday night, where they rehydrated him and started him on some basic medication. He had dropped in a short three weeks from 19 pounds to 13 pounds. He had a regular vet exam about three months ago and seemed perfectly fine so this shows how well cats hide medical issues.

I have decided not to do chemotherapy, a decision his regular vet also supports. He is on prednisone in hopes of giving him some more time. I have him at home now with his bonded friend Cutie and it's day by day right now.

When he is healthy, Thomas is a real fighter when it comes to meds, so they showed me how to make him a purrito:

Oh, LadyKay, I am so sorry to hear about Thomas. The poor baby! I know it's a difficult decision whether to do treatment or not. Enjoy the time you have left with him. He's a handsome boy and we have enjoyed seeing pictures of him over the years.

That is incredibly sad news about your lovely Thomas, I hope you get to spend some quality time with him.

I 100% know what you are going through I have been there with my previous boy, I did choose to have tablet chemotherapy which I gave him at home and prednisalone, my boy was only 5 when he lost his battle, we did have several years of good times together once on medication.

I will keep you both in my thoughts and pray for some more time for you both x

Clare:

How awful to have to deal with this in a younger cat. The only way I can accept this right now is to realize that Thomas is 11 years old now. Which is a major reason I set limits on invasive tests and chemo and things like that.

I think in your situation that is very wise as the tests alone was very invasive.

He had to have a biopsy done of his gut to determine that it was IBD then we had to wait until it was fully healed before starting the treatment because prednisalone slows down healing, somehow in between the healing and the treatment he ruptured the internal stitches and caused a hernia so he has to have another operation.

Unfortunately he started having symptoms of IBD at only 1 years old, the vet thinks he was born with it.

At one point he lost so much weight I thought I was going to wake up and find he had died.

The treatment worked well for several years, we had to go to the vets every month to be checked and have a B12 injection,he spent a lot of time staying at the vets when he had bad flare ups.

One day he took a turn for the worse, after having a scan they found his gut had ruptured and it had turned to cancer, he had an operation to remove that part of intestine, he was in hospital for several weeks, they then sent him home, I think they knew he wasn't going to make it.
By the next morning he was all hunched up looking terrible and he had wet in his bed.
I asked the vet to come to the house and put him to sleep, I will always feel sad and guilty for this although it was the right thing to do.
I had him individually cremated and keep him in my cabinet, he was my first bengal and I still miss him so much.

It brings tears to my eyes every time I think of him even though I love my 2 babies I have now he was very special to me.

I am sorry to say that he did not make it. Only a week after his diagnosis we had to return to the hospital for humane euthenasia.
