I have recently got a female bengal kitten, and just asking for some advice about paperwork and breeding etc. We have been told (prior to collecting her) that we can have her 'paperwork' when she has been neutered... we have seen mum and dads paperwork (and mum was with her). We are still considering the possibility of breeding her... but how does this work without the paperwork?
The breeder I got her from is more than happy to give information but I want to ensure that we are not been misled or misinformed. Can we register the kitten separately if we do decide to breed her? The breeder said it's 100% our decision whether we breed from her but I'm just confused as to how this works in relation to not having paperwork.

If your breeder requires evidence of a neuter prior to releasing her registration paper, it would seem that you have purchased her as a pet.

In order to breed, and register, your kitten's offspring, her breeder needs to give you registration paperwork that indicates she was sold for breeding.

Breeding stock is usually much more expensive than pet quality stock. Your breeder may or may not allow you to breed (and then register offspring from) your kitten.

If I were the breeder and did not intend for this kitten to be a Queen, I would not issue you the papers to allow you to do this and register offspring.

Did you tell your breeder you wanted to breed this kitten when you contracted with him?

Kyenta is correct. Your registration papers must indicate the cat can be bred. If sold as a pet, it is common practice for the breeder to withhold the paperwork until the cat has been fixed. If you were to go ahead and breed her without your breeder's authorization, you would not have a registered cat, could not register the litter, and the kittens could not be registered as purebred bengals. In order for the pedigree to continue, the cats must be registered as it is the ONLY way to prove your cat is a purebred bengal. Should you breed her any way, you would be considered a backyard breeder who cannot provide proper paperwork.

Breeding is not to be taken lightly. It's so much more than just a cat having kittens. And it's not just having kittens for YOUR benefit. Know that a breeding female usually goes for $2,500 to $5,000. A pet quality kitten can go from under $1,000 to $1,500. Show quality is $1,500 to $2,500. Of course, each breeder sets its own price.

Do some googling on breeding cats. If you're dead set on this kitten breeding, then you need to get approval from the breeder and pay the additional cost. Just know that you will need to do your research on any stud that you want to mate with your female and make sure they have been tested and are free of any of the health problems for bengals, especially HCM. You will also have to test your female.

If you have never had a bengal before, you need to read up on their quirks and personalities. I think you need to be happy with having a bengal kitten, getting her spayed (which can be done at any time) and provide the love and happy home she needs. You will find that no amount of money for kittens will cover the cost of caring for them until they can go to new homes at 12 weeks or later.

Thank you for your help. It confused us by saying she was happy for us to breed her, but wouldn't give us the paperwork.
We haven't made our minds up about whether we breed from her, we just want to keep all possibilities open. We didn't buy her just to breed from her.

Great point, Brian! Any female cat can have kittens, but breeders look at the pedigree and want to breed from as many Champions as possible to get that quality kitten. Those are worth more money. Without the registration papers, you are not going to know what your kitty's pedigree looks like (unless you know the pedigreed names of the parents and can look them up on the bengal pedigree databases that are online). It's one thing to go into a breeding program with multiple queens and go outside for your studs, but it is expensive and to do it right takes a lot of your time and money. Please read up on breeding. I'm guessing if you decide to breed her, your breeder will not be much help as a mentor. You are now her competition!
