It sounds like you having them is the best option all round. They look very settled! The ageing pooch looks resigned to having his tail attacked!

Question - will they one day understand a loud "no" if they jump up on things? Or even their own names?

From my experience - will they understand a firm NO? Yes. Will they listen to you? No. Will they continue to do whatever they aren't supposed to do as soon as leave the room/house/go to bed? Hell yes.

Cats do get to know their names. The word "NO" is another issue all together. Mine knows what it means. He turns around and looks at me and then just goes ahead and does whatever he was going to do anyway. They know they are super cute and can get away with anything.

Haha - so true about the NO thing. Doesn't help that I laugh each time they disobey!

I have to say Sherry that Pearl does exactly that, i say NO in a firm voice, she looks at me as if I've given her the go ahead to carry on and do it
anyway.
Then she looks at me or hubby makes her little trumpet noise as we call it, but I'm so cute mummy you forgive me.

I swear I can get so angry with Raiden and then he comes over to me and head butts me and my heart just melts!!! I end up petting, hugging and kissing him and telling him how much I love him. He has me wrapped around his little paw.
