Hi everyone it's been quite a while since the last time logged into the Bengal forum. Anyways I'm considering finally taking Tiger outside for walks on a harness. Of corse I know I need to train him indoors first, but him being just over a year now I think it's time he experienced nature. I'm just a bit unsure about the flea collar issue though. Do I have him put one on when I take him outside then remove it afterwards when I bring him in? I heard some of them can be harmful and leaves rashes if left on too long.

If he's going to go outside, then he needs flea protection, yes. A flea collar though is really really old school. Much more common now is to administer the flea prevention topically (they give you little vials of liquid that you put on his neck). That protects him better in addition to not having the downsides of the flea collar, namely the possibility of it getting hung up on something and it strangling him.

i agree with Brian. I dont flea mine, because they dont go outside, but if they did, I wouldnt consider a flea collar. You know they will need worming as well?

I do give home a monthly worming treatment as directed by the vet.

Raiden gets Frontline Plus for cats every 30 days. The thing with fleas -- they like humans as well and people can bring them into your home. A female can lay a zillion eggs and you and your cat are infested. So just putting a flea collar on Tiger when you're outside and take it off when you get home does nothing. It can take days to kill a flea! Your best option is to administer a liquid that lasts for about a month. They are not cheap -- but Raiden doesn't have fleas or ticks. It's worth the protection.

The other thing is if you are using a good harness, the flea collar and harness will conflict! Both go around the neck area. Use either a good quality walking jacket or an H harness for him. Make sure you get him used to it in the house before you ever take him outside. You do not want him fighting it outdoors and escape from it. Most of us put it on too loose anyway for fear of stifling the kitty. Just know that one walk will lead to another and another and then you're walking twice a day, sometimes three times a day, rain, snow, heat, cold.
