i was advised on here the other day about needing 2 liter boxes per cat?
the mother of the kittens has only ever used 1 i clean it daily, and will get each kitten 1 per kitten also but i wondered why 2 each?
just seems ALOT lol. Were have 6 bengals in total with mum and 5 kittens as were keeping all of them, but thats 12 boxes?
has anyone managed fine with 1 box per cat and cleaned it daily?

I have 1 per cat and I scoop the poop out every day and mix the wee round as it's the type of litter that you don't scoop out the wee, you just mix it round and it dries, I change the whole litter around every 4/5 days, I also sprinkle on litter fresh.

My cats don't seem to have a problem.

thank you for your replies, gave me abit of relief lol yes we use wooded pellets so much nicer then normal litter i couldn't cope with he concert sludge at the bottom anymore.

The standard formula is:

<number of cats> + 1

So:

1 cat = 2 boxes
2 cats = 3 boxes
3 cats = 4 boxes
etc.

6 bengals in the house - suggests 7 boxes, but probably equals "run away and hide". Whilst you have 5 of them still in the kitten stage that is going to be more of a circus than a household :-)

We have 2 boys and 1 litter box. It works fine. I clean 1 - 2 times per day. I know many people who have only one litter box for two cats.
I use wooden litter. And it is fine, it is not so heavy and I can put lumps in to toilet.

The rule is one per cat, plus one extra! I have two for my one bengal. One week he will use one exclusively, the next week, he will use the other one. My sister had 8 cats and one litterbox and it had to be completely emptied daily.

I have also heard you should have as many litter boxes as you have cats, plus one extra.

If ever you think you might not be able to clean daily (I know sometimes I struggle with that due to my busy schedule, but I do get to it every second day usually), then definitely get the extra box. I know mine is picky and if her box gets "too dirty" in her mind, she will pee on other stuff.

Mine is like Sherry's ... one week she goes pee in one, poo in the other ... the next week she won't use one and will only use the other ... and another week she'll switch it up again. It's always different.

I read this rule, but i havent space for three litter boxes in my flat.
So I am happy that one is ok for my boys, now.

Space is a huge issue when it comes to litter boxes. You want them out of the way and to give the kitty some privacy when using. Raiden has one in the utility room and one in his outdoor enclosure. The only other spot I have it in our bathroom. Maybe I need to invent space-saving litter boxes -- like going vertical.

Lol yes sherry! I have a tiny apartment and finding room for even two boxes is a struggle... Wall mountable litter boxes!... But how to contain the inevitable escaping litter and how to make it easy to clean?!

People have put litter boxes in dressers, nightstands to save space. I was thinking of steps and have at least two litter boxes accessible in a limited amount of space going upward. Just a thought! Space is a huge issue when you have multiple cats. They usually want a nice, quiet spot. I think mine has gone to the outdoor litter box because I stand over him and watch his poop to see the consistency of it and he doesn't like that. However, whenever I am in the bathroom, he has to be right there rubbing up against my legs.
