Bedtime Routine!

Ha ha just had to mention this.

My son has Aspergers and has a strict bedtime routine every night.

Oscar, one of my rescue kittens is usually downstairs in the living room but as soon as he hears the bedtime routine starting he will dart upstairs and wait by my son's bedroom door and then jump in bed with him.

He will stay there with him for about an hour and then come back downstairs again. The same thing every single night.

It does make me laugh and I wonder why he does it. Maybe he just likes to be part of the bedtime routine or maybe my cat has Aspergers too lol.

Aww that's really sweet, how do they get on in general? I've had cats that had that pattern too, in that they'd want to hang around until the point I fall asleep, and maybe a little beyond, but then at some point they'd want to get up and do their own thing again until morning. For the most part now, at age 5, all three cats just want to find a place in my bedroom, and crash until morning. When I wake up they are usually in the exact same spot as when I fell asleep now.

Debbie, that is super sweet! I recently read something online about a dog that would do the same with a little girl when she went to bed. They had two dogs, but only one dog would do that. That doggie passed away and the second dog took over that evening, doing the same thing. Animals are so perceptive! I don't think we realize just how much they understand. It's wonderful that Oscar does this and I know it comforts your son as well.

Cats love routine. They love knowing what comes next. It's sweet how he worked his way into your son's bedtime routine. I have had cats my whole life and they always "tucked me in" at night. They didn't always stay the night in my arms, but they always stayed until I fell asleep. Maybe they think it's their " job" by providing comfort to us, or maybe they just want to be hugged and petted. Once we fall asleep, they move on. There is nothing like a sweet kitty to love. It's great you decided to adopt these two.

My son and the two kittens get on very well. Oscar is not keen on cuddles being forced on him and because he is the cutest of the two (in my son's eyes as he's smaller with big eyes!) my son will try to cuddle him a lot with Oscar looking less than amused! That's why it's even more surprising that he joins in with the bedtime routine with such gusto. Oscar also becomes very cuddly with him and I can hear the two of the cooing away to each other :mrgreen:

Jasper is a big teddy bear, will let you pick him up all the time and purrs immediately on approach. He's funny as he will kneed your hands and when he is picked up and put over your shoulder (he loves this) he will kneed away at your shoulder back or even nothing at all lol.

I think it must be something to do with the routine that Oscar loves :mrgreen:

I've always thought that cats have a different set of rules for adults and for kids. More tolerant, more forgiving when it comes to kids. Don't know why that is exactly, but that's what I've observed.

Cats and dogs seem to sense that children are different from adults. They tolerate the toddler behavior for the most part -- but we had company one time and the son was pestering our kitty. The cat would meow and get away from him, but he just kept coming over to the cat. We kept telling him to stop bothering the cat. This went on and on several times and finally our kitty scratched him. The little boy came running to his dad crying "that cat scratched me." Well .... our cat had warned him over and over again and finally lashed out! Of course, he left the cat alone after that.

Toddlers and cats can be a bit of a nightmare. Probably sound very nasty but I feel more sorry for the cat lol.

Definitely agree that cats do treat children differently. Oscar who is more of the highly strung for want of a better word of the two is much more tolerant of my son than he is of us. I think they definitely do sense something and act accordingly.

I was doing my physio therapy exercises today for my knee and had my thick mat rolled out on the floor. I lay down on my back and got half way through the first exercise when Jasper came over right next to me and lay on his back with his paws up in the air.

He's just started to do this for tummy tickles. I had one hell of a time trying to do my strenuous exercises between fits of giggles with Jasper laying beside me!
