My brother just adopted a male 2 year old Bengal from a shelter. Jet was a breeder cat so we don't know if he was underfoot or caged. My brother has had him for a week and he just started urinating on the countertop and has sprayed a couple of times on the walls. He was fixed 2 weeks ago. My brother, who has never wiped up cat urine said he "thought" it seemed thick but didn't know what cat urine was like. The cat is also eating like crazy. The other big thing is my brother already has a 2 year old Bengal who is a play machine and wants to play with the new cat, chase him and bat him on the head. The new cat, Jet, hides all the time except when its feeding time. I told him he should call the vet about the urinating but we also wonder if a caged breeder cat that he was, along with recently getting fix and the stress of my brothers other Bengal might be make this poor little guy so stressed out that he's peeing and marking. I've had cats before but don't remember ever having to wipe up urine... is it on the thicker side and not like water?

First of all, welcome to the forum! There is a lot going on in your brother's household right now. I was thinking one thing until I got to the part where there is a second bengal. Rescuing a bengal from a breeding program is quite different than getting a kitten from a breeder. You don't know what type of situation the kitty came from -- was he housed in a cattery (most male cats are housed away from the other cats). Was he allowed to socialize with members of the breeder's family. At any rate, you cannot expect him to come into a new home and settle in immediately. It's quite stressful, especially when there is another cat involved.

Neutering a male does not instantly change their behavior. He will continue to mark! The inappropriate peeing could be a number of things -- was he ever litter box trained? Does your brother have THREE (yes, THREE) litter boxes for the two kitties? Are there multiple cat trees? Some think adding another cat is no big deal, however, it is a huge deal to the resident cat. Bengals are highly territorial. Know, too, that it is extremely common for the new kitty to hide. Let's face it -- EVERYTHING is new to him. He's terrified. Your bother is just going to have to have patience and work with these kitties. There is a proper introduction process which keeps the two separated and then swap scents from bedding. It usually takes a couple of weeks before you even put the two cats together. If the cats get off on the wrong foot, it can take some time to get things back on track.

The other thing is that you always take a new cat to the vet for a checkup! I honestly don't know that urine is supposed to be thick. But, a wellness checkup is always a good idea to start a medical history on the new cat.

Jet went to vet and everything checked out. He's such a mellow Bengal unlike his new brother (the play machine). I'm going to give my brother all the suggestions you've given me and I hope things start to smooth out between the two cats. Patience is the key.

Jet has stopped spraying and is getting along great with his new brother, however, the problem remains with him urinating on the floor. The vet checked out with the urine test. Aside from adding another litter pan, is there anything else that can be done? I know that he got very startled one time when I was over there and ran like crazy to his litter pan. Could this still be nerves? Litter pan size? Litter type? Covered litter pan?

A litter box is a huge deal to a cat. You don't know whether they prefer it covered, open. You want to get a large sized box. Try some "cat attract" and see if that helps. Litter boxes must also be clean. These things don't improve overnight. Obviously, this kitty is still startled and not completely comfortable in his new surroundings. Give it time ... lots of time. Oh ... and location of litter box is extremely important. A cat needs privacy and not to feel trapped if the other cat or people come around. Multiple escape routes are necessary.

Hmm, it's kind of a clever idea, we'll have to see how it does when your bengals are full grown. The nice thing about a tradition open box (like the one you are comparing against) is that the bengal can "hang out" of it, both above and over the front edge. In the new box, I'm not sure they'd be able to do that. But we'll see.

Totes are terrific and come in many sizes. Cut down an opening and dump in some litter and the cats are pretty happy.
