Panting after play normal?

Had a pretty intense play session of chase the feather thing and he was doing back flips and what not but then I noticed he was panting just like a dog! Is this ok I have heard from a vet before this can signal a cardiac problem? Is this me being paranoid and him just playing hard or should I be worried? :eek:

I am not sure what causes it, but Grace does it when we play with DaBird. She also did it when she got outside a ripped patio screen. She was frantically bouncing off screens trying to get back in and panting. She seems healthy otherwise and the vet never noticed anything when listening to her heart.

Serafina used to do that. The first time she did that, she would just relentlessly play and sprint and jump until she was so tired that she panted and just kind of crashed onto her side. Then was mellow and contented and happy, like a euphoric athlete after a very hard workout. But it worried me too, seeing her like that, so ever since I've tried hard to "ease off" before she got to that point. Nowadays she's much wiser and less reckless. She knows how to pace herself and when she's had enough.

Yes he Zeus was playing quite intense doing back flips and launching himself in the air he goes a kitty nutty for his birdy things like i mean nutty LOL full of energy I'm assuming he didn't pace himself lol...I did manage to take it away once i noticed he was panting as i figured he was over exerting..I literally had to take it and hide it in a cupboard because he is relentless with it :lol:

Jackson Galaxy tells owners to play with their kitties until they pant -- usually just to tire them out. Cats can over-exert themselves just like humans and panting is their natural way of exhaling the heat from their body since they cannot sweat. You do not want to overdo it, even though the kitty may want to continue to play. Watch carefully and I would try to slow things down and cool him off.

I usually stop play when they start panting, let them cool down and rest for a while then play again when they are ready.

Both of our moggies do that - I think it might be because they get too hot :) panting is a way to regulate body temperature
