Digging in water bowl?

Hi there just wondered if any of your cats do this and if anyone has any idea why?

I've noticed on quite a few occasions that Jasper digs with both paws (like digging a hole) in his water bowl until it's completely empty and the water is all over the floor!

The pair of them also love to sit in the sink?

The only thing I can think of with the digging is that he is somehow connecting this with covering his food which is kept on the opposite side from his water bowl?

It is an instinctive thing from the ALC side of things - clearing twigs, leaves, etc from a stream before drinking the water.

Someone recommended this product and it is great, I put their water dishes on it so when they splash it doesn't go into the tile grout and baseboards.

I think Cranberry is probably right, but ultimately it may be that the water doesn't smell right to him (remember the strong nose thing...). It may be like "let me see if I can get rid of some of this bad water and perhaps get to some better water underneath...".

*shrug* just a guess. I don't recall ever having a cat that did that. Next time it happens you might want to pay close attention to what the actions were that led up to him doing that. Like did he walk up and sniff the bowl immediately before doing that? Or did he take a small taste and then do that?

I have a stainless steel and pyrex bowl sided by side that I wash daily and fill with filtered water. They don't do it every day, but Blondie sits there and splashes all the water out for some reason. Then she dances in it and races around crazed. I just ignore her and clean up the mess. I accept my role as staff in their house.

Raiden just did this and emptied his water bowl all over the neater feeder and the floor! This is cat behavior and not necessarily bengal behavior! LOL

Thanks everyone! Maybe someone can give me an explanation why Oscar sits on my hands every time I get my laptop out but I think I know the answer to that one! Demanding attention!

Brian, I'll have to watch out and see if I can figure out if that's the cause. The drinking bowl is made out of metal. Not sure if that makes water taste funny?

Jagger made an awful mess last night drowning a toy in his water bowl and splashing the water everywhere. We recently bought one of those dish drying mats by JML they keep advertising on TV and use that under their water bowl now. It at least dries out so that when you pick the mat up it isn't damp underneath if you weren't there when the mess was made and the rest dried out!

My girl prefers to drink out of the dog bowl hanging off the side, I think she prefers the depth of the water and larger expanse of water. :lol:
