I recently took on a new cat which a lady was selling as she says she couldn't give it enough attention. She said the cat is a Bengal although I'm am skeptical and think she may have been told it is a Bengal when it is an Egyptian Mau. She's a a beautiful cat, and I adore her either way but I'm curious to find out.

That sure looks like a Bengal to me!

The bengal breed stems from the Egyptian Mau -- so they are similar. They are also called bronze spotted cats. The main difference that I can see is that the spots are smaller on an Egyptian Mau. And the fur is usually lighter. A bengal has a pelt that is different than fur and it is silky soft and shiny. It's difficult to tell from your picture, but either way, you have a beautiful kitty. They say an EM is more like a cat and a bengal more like a dog. They both require a lot of time and attention and are extremely loyal to their owners.

*shrug* it's difficult to tell. Could be a Mau as they share common lineage. Of course, just in terms of odds, what are the odds she is? Mau's are probably 100's of times scarcer than bengals these days, so it would be somewhat awesome if that were the case.

It looks like an Egyptian Mau to me which is awesome!! As said above they aren't a breed you commonly see.
The reason I believe it to be a Mau and not a Bengal is 1) the spots, Bengals have rosettes (not exclusively) whereas Mau's have defined, smaller spots.
It could well be a cross, either way she's gorgeous.

She's very beautiful, and looks extremely similar to my silver registered Bengal. He has EM in his lineage though, so I would suspect yours is a Bengal that originally used an EM to cross with like mine :)

I'm seeing more of a bengal. The Egyptian Mau has smaller spots. A bengal will have varying sizes of rosettes.
