Post subject: Our new addition, Ryu !
PostPosted: Mon Feb 29, 2016 6:41 pm
hello everyone

after the incredibly long (seeming) 2 month wait, a few weeks ago we went and picked up the newest addition to our family, Ryu. He is a ruddy colored Abyssinian from the wonderful Sumatra Cattery in IA. He has been a bundle of joy, mischief, energy, mischief, entertainment, mischief... We decided on an Abyssinian because I have always heard that they do well with bengals with their high energy level. We got him because my fiance loves cats also but always complains and says that Link is 'my cat'

It took him and Link about two days before they were play fighting and chasing each other, and another couple days until they were sleeping together. It has brought out a side in Link I haven't seen since he was a kitten and have been incredibly fun to watch play with each other.

Here are some pictures of him:

Awesome, awesome, awesome. I'd love to hear lots more about the Abby  I've always been fascinated by them, and if I was to ever get another cat, an Abby would be at the very top of my list.

And yea, that's what I think one of the coolest things about having multiple cats is... seeing them interact with each other (for better or worse).

Will do man! I have too he is great, we couldn't believe how tiny he was at 12 weeks weighing 1lb 6oz. In his litter there was another ruddy female and 2 blue females. We love the ruddy coloring and how he looks like a little puma. His energy level is off the charts, and he quickly tried to find Link as soon as we got them home. We set him up in a safe room but, they were growling at each other under the door and wouldn't stop so I decided to just let them together. After hissing and hiding from each other for a few hours they were butt sniffin' and chasing each other around like buds. It's crazy the difference in the experiences I went through with Link and his breeder as a kitten and going through this one who we carefull researched and checked out all the right way. I'd be happy to answer and other questions about him and/or take advice as I'm constantly learning too.

So how would you compare Ryu to how Link was at a similar age? What sort of mischief has he gotten himself into?

Lovely!! He's so cute, definitely a bit of a gremlin... What does the lizard think? Or is it a chamaeleon?

Well Link was so skiddish and in such poor health is still such a shy guy that I think he was different than most other bengals in kittenhood (still has his wildcat moments and spazzes but has never been super mischievous). Just the difference in having to jump through loops with Links breeder to get any kind of papers or health records, and how helpful and professional Ryu's breeder has been eye opening in that regard. Ryu is CRAZY. He moves more like a squirrel than any cat I've ever seen and is a huge lover when he tires down but if he wants to play he wants to play. He is a paper shredder we've found out so far, and pays a lot more attention to electric cords than Link ever did. His most notorious quirk so far is probably his 4 am routine of coming and walking on your face. I got Link closer to 6 months but he was easily doubled if not triple the size of Ryu is now. My Fiancee and I were both stunned when we went to pick him up by his size. He was the second smallest, the biggest of his litter being 2.7lbs. He has really brought some life back into Link, it's been great watching them play together, when I first got Link my roommate at the time had a cat and they got along really well, and when we moved after that I have always felt that he missed the cat-to-cat connection. He's adapted so well, I couldn't ask for better feline friends.

@Inky He is a Bearded Dragon. Link (the bengal) pays him no attention, and will sleep next to him and really doesn't give him a second glance lol. Ryu (in the middle) is very inquisitive, but scared for the most part of him too. They all get along with no issues (supervised of course).

My cats have cornered lizards that size with full intent to kill. They bring them to the bathroom and stash the uneaten remains under the bath mat. It's the thing I like least about my cats. They become so crazed and possessive over the lizard that it is near impossible to get one away from them before it is crunched up and eaten. It will be lizard season in another month or so and that craziness will start up again. My girls can be so sweet and loving and in a blink of an eye turn into ruthless killers. I would definitely supervise visits.

THank you all for the kind words!

@spitspot The resemblance is scary! When we first met him in person we both looked at each other and expected to hear "Mogwai, not for sale!"

@Sherry Thank you!! If only Ryu was from Mortal Kombat and not Street Fighter, him and Raiden could be enemies!

I appreciate the "offer," Sc0tt, but Raiden already hates the outdoor b/w cat that I take care of. Long Legs loves to follow us on our daily walks, but he keeps a safe distance from Raiden! Raiden has attacked him a few times before I could catch him.
