That made me chuckle - I bought a cat mate feeder and it was thrown across the room in seconds of me putting it down, to the point the batteries came out and they would never have got their dinner lol
I now have Sure Feeders that are activated by their microchips. They don't have a timer on them, but the wet food stays fresh pretty much all day, doesn't go hard and crusty and flies can't get to it either. The smell is also contained.
So if you were to go out for a day or whatever you can easily put extra wet food in there to get them through the day. They do split trays as well, so you can put wet one side and dry the other which is what I do as Hendrix can't eat the same dry as Jagger as it upsets his tummy - Jagger won't touch the dry food that Hendrix needs to help his digestion - which is the reason I got the feeders in the first place.
They are very sturdy and I must admit I was worried that I'd spend all that money and they would break them, but they have withstood my two Bengals and both of my boys caught on very quickly to how they work.
They are a bit pricey, but if you look around, you can usually get them a bit cheaper. I ordered mine from Pets At Home online and if you spent over £100 you got 15% off and their RRP is £99 each so I just added in something for a £1. But it would be worth checking Zooplus as well I would think.
This is what they look like. You can get different coloured mats and trays:
