dealing with pet loss

It is one of the hardest things in the world to say goodbye to a beloved furry friend.
I had to do this 5 years ago with my first ever bengal, I lost him to cancer at the age of 5, we went through so much together when he was diagnosed with IBD which eventually turned to cancer, he had chemo and operations in the end I had to make the choice.
It was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life and although I have 2 beautiful cats now I still miss him every day, I have his little urn and photo in my glass cabinet where I can see him every day.
Whenever I read about someone losing there babies it makes me cry, even writing this I have tears on my cheeks.
It does get easier as time goes by and I find I think more about the good times we had.

When I said goodbye to my boys, Rusty and T'chai, then my girls, Cleo and Cassie, I swore I would never have another cat... Then Merlin came into my life. He is completely anal about most things and wants everything HIS WAY or NOT! The thing is, I cannot help but laugh at him and love him more, because HIS WAY is a combination of everything all the others used to do. Every quirk he has, one of the others had. He just has an awful lot in the one critter!
I see it as my boys n girls decided to send me him, plotting together from Rainbow Bridge, and each of them put a little bit of themselves into him, knowing I would recognise and love him all the more for those traits:
He jumps back and forth over my head to wake me up - That's Rusty.
He throws himself across me for cuddles and licks my eyes - That's T'chai
He gobs off at me if I say NO, and always wants to sample my food given half a chance - That was Cleo
If I tell him off, he plots revenge - Normally something that hurts me! - That was Cassie.

In all, all their endearing qualities are there, it just took me time to recognise them, now I see it as they are all still with me. I hope this helps you to see the same in your two fur babies, and that Lilo chose them for you, to fill the void she would leave.

Sherry, when I adopted my two kittens I was asked my age and for the first time I became to realise that this may be an issue as I'm in my 50's now.

I don't think I'll ever stop owning cats though but maybe when that time comes will be looking at older cats rather than kittens. Saying that it would feel nice to be able to give a home to an elderly cat too.

My problem is that if something happens to me, my husband will be lost as to how to take care of a cat. He has never done it! He has no idea how much food to give Raiden, he refuses to clean a litter box. Hubby enjoys having Raiden on his lap and brushing him and massaging him -- but that's it! He won't walk him and Raiden would drive him absolutely crazy wanting to go out. We will just enjoy Raiden for the time that we have him. But I am too old to be woken up at 3 a.m. and walking him in freezing temps and snow is not fun or good for me either! I am much closer to 70 than I am to 60.

My husband is the same and I'm left to deal with our cats which I don't mind one bit but would be nice if he got involved a bit!

He does enjoy them but just doesn't enjoy the work involved looking after them.
