Thing is, these little hamsters can somehow find a way to get out. Even if a child is hold it, they can drop it on the floor and the little guy is off and running and can easily squeeze under a door. I know it's too late for you -- and Brian, you are soooo funny -- but I'm thinking "lunch" again as well. No matter how careful you can be, this is a disaster waiting to happen AGAIN!

I dont know what doors you have where you live,but ours doors are shut and maybe 1 page of paper can pass through thats it. I can bet 1millions dollars that this hamster can not pass the door once its shut. And yes i even lock the door so no one comes in or out when its hamster time.
Thank you for those who find the name Lunch funny. I wonder how you would feel if i would call your cats my next carpet rugs. Lmao!
If anybody needs to know how to get a cage cat proof just ask me! We got it! Thanks for all the helpful and kind responses.

I really hope it all works out for you and your new hammy! It sounds as if you have put a huge deal of thought into the design. Gerbils live in glass cases so I guess why not hamsters! As long as they have the climbing stuff inside and tubes etc then it should all be perfect. Honeypie would constantly climb the sides of her cage and hang from the roof of it going pawto paw across it! She kind of looked like a special forces hamster/monkey

Thank you Melissa,i am glad that atleast somebody is understanding.
Brian, did you read my first post at all? The Cats did NOT eat the hamster. They were able to scratch his paws while he was hangin on the gitter lid. The scratch was SO small that we didnt see it! Only the vet found the marks and he must of got a blood infection.
My husband and i have found the PERFECT solution for the cage. We would never have bought "Lunch" if we thought it could happen again. Also my son cant open the lid yet alone get his hands in the cage. I am still trying to find a way to send some pictures i have of the cage. I will be working on it to get the photos the right size to post. Brian,dont worry i have a good sense of humor. I actually seriously sometimes want to say lunch instead of Filix. And i dont want to start a fight or anything like that.
We all make mistakes and accidents happen..but we learn from them. Thats what unfortunatly happened to us with the hamster.

And the air supply is real simple the wood gets moved while the door is shut. Plus we checked 100% that the hamster has absolute no way to get to the gitter part.
Oh and i am surprised that the cats have not been in the room..they havent even bothered to come smell some lunch

Hopefully Filix is safe and secure and can live out his life in peace from little munchkins. To me, hamsters look like mice and I don't like mice! LOL

Lol Sherry i dont like mice aswell. But i love hamsters! The cage is 100% secured..and when we give food or take him out the door is locked. :) Filix is cute!

You would really be surprised how small a hole a mouse can get through. I kept hearing scratching in our wall and couldn't figure out what was going on. We started finding sunflower seed shells (we keep them in the house as we feed the birds). We followed the trail and discovered a pile next to a receptacle plate that allows a cable wire to go through. It was teeny tiny. We also found piles of uneaten seeds in our linen closet. I researched and found they can slip through a tiny crack! I don't know how they do it. We had to cover the opening up and my husband went downstairs to seal up the place it was coming into the wall! Things have been quiet since, unless Raiden brings a mouse in from his enclosure. Very small openings in there, too, but somehow they find a way in.

I spoke to my husband and he also reckons Filix wont be able to crawl under the door. When it is shut there might be 1mm that he would have to squeeze through.
The only mice I have seen here in Switzerland are the ones our neighbors cat brings...dead. But when I was a small child living in south Africa I once saw a chocolate bar that was next to my parents bed moving. So I told my parents and they came to look. It was a mouse trying to steal the chocolate! We still laugh about it today.
Filix is doing great and I am so happy that the cats aren't bothered anymore. They aren't forever sitting in that room.
Ps have you seen the film Mouse Hunt?? It's classic!

Not familiar with a film called "Mouse Hunt," but the rat carrying the piece of pizza in a NY subway has gone viral!

UPDATE: We might have blamed the cats and it is possible it was not their fault!!! The wooden wheel we bought at the pet store has VERY sharp pieces that could very easily hurt the hamster or even so that they get a piece of wood in their paws. We discovered it and took it out immediately! We are going to the pet store with it and we want then to know that it is dangerous for the hamsters! We discovered tho problem because there was a tiny bit of blood on watch section of the wheel. But Filix is doing just fine! I am just mad that the pet store sells items that are dangerous for an animal!
