Good luck in getting your kitties to use the human toilet. Better luck in getting them to actually flush the toilet. LOL. Seriously, you now have a complete understanding of the situation and you see how dire it is that the cats be separated or you find some way the cross contamination stops. Another round of the medication is absolutely necessary! Two weeks seem like a long time, but if you can get this cured -- your household will be so much better off and your kitties will feel a whole lot better.

It really is worth it trying to separate them with treatment.

It is flaming difficult. As I had we had Muskey stuck in our bedroom for well over a month and Dexter downstairs. We had to go through the TF treatment and then have both retested. This all took some time.

Lots of traipsing up and down stairs with food, changing litter trays etc but it worked so was worth it.

Debbie, I'm sorry you had to deal with this as well. If you can handle it for the few weeks that it takes, it is more than worth it to rid the pets of this horrible parasite!

Hi

I've tried the pumpkin (tinned)... and the Pro Kolin paste... in their food to no avail (the poo is still a sticky brown sauce consistency).... does anyone know of any other way to relieve the symptoms of TF and firm up the poos?

When my cats had runny poo as kittens the vet told me to give them some rice, so I ground chicken breast with rice and it worked. It should not be a permanent diet, but an occasional meal to give them some relief.

You could also try a single protein diet that doesn't upset their stomachs. Sometimes that helps but they can't stay on it indefinitely as it doesn't have all the nutrients they need.

I've heard that feeding raw can also help but I know nothing about raw feeding.

We fed Dexter grilled lamb steaks lucky chap. We were about to transfer to a single lamb protein cat food on recommendations of specialist vet but he developed FIP.

We were never sure what caused Dexter's ongoing diarrhoea issues even after the TF was cleared up. Maybe his gut was damaged or he may have had food intolerances.

Unless you treat the underlying reason for the diarrhea, it is not going to go away! You can add things to the food which may help somewhat, but it's never going to go away. Your poor kitties do not need to continue to suffer through this. Probiotics, pumpkin .. there may be other things that might help MASK the situation, but the stools will never harden up without getting rid of the original problem!!! Find a vet who knows how to treat something like this. I take Raiden to a wonderful vet practice with four vets with varying degrees of experience and knowledge. They share information and learn together -- it's the prefect situation in treating an animal.

Have to agree with Sherry.

All these things do tend to mask the symptoms.

Bit of an update.

Having found it impossible to replicate the environment / conditions needed to treat the cats successfully we have had them both admitted to the Langford vet hospital near Bristol. It's a huge place where they train vets and know a lot about TF. They have both cats in their isolation ward where they are kept separate from each other and monitored 24/7. The Ronidazol is being administered and their environment kept sterile with immediate cleansing after toilets.

They said that after 2 days poos became solid... so it's looking a darn sight more hopeful than when we tried treating them at home. They've got another 8 days left.... I'm hoping this is successful...

Was an expensive move... but literally the only way I could think would work with both cats... It' won't be pleasant for them being away for so long.... but if this clears up it will be well worth it...

Fingers tightly crossed.

Gosh, this has really been an ordeal for you! While your babies are away, you need to sanitize everything around your home so that when they return, everything is fresh and new again. I hope this takes care of it.

Wow, I bet that is costing a small fortune. It sounds like the best way to be rid of TF once and for all!

I'm hoping pet plan will cover it... but if they don't it's four figures... but in my view was the only chance of getting rid of it effectively... They needed to remain sterile... something I can't keep up when I'm sleeping.... having a 24 hour monitoring by vets and nurses was the only way.... After living with the vile vile stench of TF poo in the house I'd pay almost anything to get rid of it.. .

Thankfully after day 2 their poo firmed up... They have also run some blood tests to check for general stomach / GI sensitivities ... to determine if they'll need to remain on the sensitive food in the long term... I really hope not as I want to feed them a really nutritious diet of uber high quality stuff...

House is being thoroughly cleaned... shampoo of the carpets today... all bedding through the wash... and bleach down of all hard surfaces.... I'll ensure no TF can remain here... although the vets did say in a dry environment it will die after 6 hours or so... so after 2 weeks we're highly unlikely to have any lingering...

Fingers remain tightly crossed we've seen the last of it
