Hahaha, thanks for reviving this ancient post. Brings back good memories, and some of the fun forum member characters from back then 4-and-a-half years ago! How time flies.

The way I look at it is that the cat is going to investigate everything. When we bring in our groceries, Raiden is on the counter sniffing through the bags. There is nothing on my counter that can harm him and if he decides to get into the cactus plant that is in the window -- maybe he'll learn a lesson on his own (doubt it). Raiden loves to jump up on everything and, as long as he can fit properly, there's no problem. Recently, he has tried climbing up the CD tower and twice has managed to reach the top of it. I worry about it falling down on him, but that's it.

I hate to say this, but I think you won't stop him. Our old Bengal, Oakley, was very clever and learnt quickly to stay off the worktops, although we did allow him to sit on the laundry worktop as a compromise and also gave him a bar stool, so that he could sit next to the worktop when I was cooking! Charlie however, our new Bengal, also very clever, ignores us totally! He blatantly steps onto the counters watching us, to get a reaction! We used the same method of training with both cats, so I think you need to just give up and close the kitchen door if you have one. Please don't smack him, even gently! Bengals are so easily traumatised and are prone to depression. He will be distraught.

this is my first post I haven't introduced myself yet - new Bengal owner to be - will do so soon on the introduction thread - but I relate to this thread so much that I laughed hard and just had to post....

We were privileged to have had a Havana Brown named "Q" for 17 years. In his younger days, he displayed alot of the traits mention in this thread. We were tearing our hair out to begin with. We tried everything and ultimately have ONE piece of advice - accept

Eventually we were able to keep him off food preparation surfaces (most of the time) and he had his bench area he could watch from. But where safety of the household was concerned, he would ignore all rules and twice he HOWLED blue murder during the day to warn me that I had left an unlit gas hob burner running. And he was sitting right next to it to point it out to me. What a little trooper.

We have a Bengal coming soon, and we fully expect to have the same if not more level of defiance that our "Q" had.

And it's just that - a cat with so much character is what we so love and want........ please remind me of this if I later post frustration about my new Bengal when I bring him home.....ha ha.

What a great idea -- ACCEPT! It's really difficult to "train" cats and it takes a lot of patience and time. Raiden is usually on the counter as I'm preparing his food. I just put him on the floor along with his bowl and he's fine. And that's the last of it until the next time. Some days I can get his food ready before he's ready.
