Can anybody share some tips and advice for Xmas with the cats? This will be our first Xmas together and I want to get a tree for my son. But I just have no clue what it will be like having a decorated Christmas tree...i somehow already see them climbing and having "fun" with the tree. How do you all celebrate Christmas with a tree and the cats?

Like this lol

Just be prepared to keep picking it up and redecorating! We are trying a real tree this year (gluttens for punishment), so I have already ordered a heavy base, will be watering it in the morning and then shutting the door until the evening - when hopefully most of the water will be gone in case it still gets knocked over...

To be fair, after a couple of weeks they tend to get bored of climbing it. I'm going to put the tree up, let them get it out of their systems and very gradually start to decorate it.

Of course by the time they are bored of climbing the tree, I am usually bored of having to keep picking it up and redecorating and it looks an utter shambles

Lol that picture made me laugh! Oh boy I guess I will be having a busy Xmas. I can't even have flowers in the house because these two just can't keep their paws to themselves. They love bumping it over and ripping flowers apart.

I got a small, bushy 4 foot tree last year. I put a few non-breakable ornaments on it. The tree moved around the room some how, but they never knocked it over. They did however eat the needles and played in the water.

I've seen pictures of a cat IN the tree! Bengals are super curious, so you know they are going to be ALL over that tree as soon as they notice it. And, don't wrap the presents either as they have been known to get into them and spoil the surprise for all the good little girls and boys. Good luck is about all I can tell you. Put the tree up Christmas Eve and take it down the end of Christmas Day! LOL If not, be prepared. The cats love to play with the hanging ornaments, too, especially if the light catches them and they glisten. My husband and I do not put up a tree, so this is one thing we do not have to worry about! But I can't wait to hear your story, Genevieve.

Hope Lilith is better!

Ha ha good luck to you!!! About seven yrs ago at Christmas my three yr old played with the cat flap locking mechanism and locked the cats in. We did not have a litter tray as the cats would not use it and preferred to go outside. Bless them, the cats needed to pee and poo so they chose the nearest thing to nature to use as a toilet. Yes, you guessed it........under the Christmas tree . We had lots of presents under there and a train on a track. Needless to say, three presents ruined, rug needed professional cleaning and I was scrubbing cat poo from in between the train tracks. Took me hours! Last year, Oscar our rescue bengal did not bother with the tree but wrapping paper, presents and ribbon was just too tempting to resist! The girls each had a few nibbled presents on Christmas morning!

One of mine climbs it and takes naps in it, one steals the sparkley ornaments, and the rest sleep under it. I would advise non-breakable ornaments and not investing a lot of money in a tree. We just replace ours every few years. Good luck!!

I have yet to attempt a tree. We may get a small one this year and just put it up with some lights on it but no ornaments and see what happens.

I've gotten trees twice while I've had my bengals, and both times I just got a nice tree, put it in a stand... and that was it. No decorations. Nice smell though, and the cats liked messing around with it.

Okay one thing I now know for sure is I wont be putting up our ornaments! My mom got me all these glass balls with little angels inside...and I don't want to be cleaning up broken glass all the time.
I hope my son won't be disappointed if the cats open his presents...but knowing him he might just get annoyed.

Cats are more likely to climb an artificial tree than a live one. The artificial one is easier, I think. Quasar has never bothered our (live) tree. It is so dense, I think it is hard to climb up the trunk without getting prickled all over.

We leave precious danglies toward the top of the tree, however.

We also have a train that runs around the base of the tree. He has not bothered this either.

Well, it sounds like we will be up for some interesting stories as you all put up your trees and the presents underneath! Deputy, you will have TWO kitties by then. Genevieve, I definitely would be careful with any type of fragile ornament that you don't want broken. You may find you can hang them in another type of Christmas decoration where your kitties can't get to them.
