hello ,I have a bengal girl about 19 months old ,Snowbelle had a lump where her vaccination was (vaccinated by breeder before i collected her) it did go eventually but vet suggested it could have gone into a muscle when she had it , she was unable to walk at all about 24 hours later and after loads of tests and a stay in a specialised vet hospital for 4 days she started to improve she could run about but not jump polyneuropathy was suspected,I cancelled any more invasive tests and asked for a course of steroids for her ,it was a fairly low dose but after a few weeks she was fine and I tapered off the steroids. she is now a demanding big beautiful girl into everything . My problem is I want to put her in a cattery for a week and so I need for her to be vaccinated , I have asked advice from vets but all are not able to re-assure me she will be ok, I so dont want to cause her any health problems ,she is so well and happy but I do need to see my family sometimes and they are too far away for a day trip.HELP!

You need to know what type of vaccination was used. It sounds like she had a similar reaction to our old Bengal Oakley. He almost died at his first jab and spent 2 days on a drip. I read up on this and another option is a 'dead' virus, as opposed to the 'live' one often used. Unfortunately Oakley was allergic to this too, so not insurable and we also couldn't put him into a cattery. Instead we had to get a house sitter, but as Bengals tend to get depressed in catteries, this was a preferable option to us anyway.
The vet can monitor her as soon as she has had the vaccine and keep her for 24 hours, just to be safe. If the dead vaccine reacts too, I'm afraid there's not much you can do. Good luck.

Is there any way you could pay for a cat sitter rather than put her into a cattery? One that visits once or twice a day.

Every time I've put any of my cats into catteries they have been stressed, lost weight and become ill. One even developed Leukaemia (not the contagious type) and the Vet told us it had probably come on through stress. He was the best cat I ever had a lovely little black and white moggy. Such a character.

Don't want to scare you (probably have!) but I feel your cat particularly as she was poorly through vaccinations in the past may be better with a sitter. Maybe her immune system wasn't quite up to scratch when she was little and that's why she had a bad reaction she may by fine this time.

I am based in the UK and sitters over here are actually much cheaper than catteries.

Thankfully, I don't go away often, but I did board Raiden at the vets the last time I was gone for a week. I don't trust Raiden to not escape through the door when my pet sitter comes in and out and I could never forgive myself if he got free and away from her. I see this on Lost Pet sites on Facebook where the pet escaped from the pet sitter. Who wants that on the poor pet sitter? Raiden survived his jaunt in there and has a 3-story condo in a large cage. He got to play in the cat play room as well. At least I knew where he was and that if he got sick or something happened to him, he could be treated right there and then.
