"Why Not Adopt a Shelter Cat?"

I love orientals. They are smart, loyal and beautiful to look at. When I was in my early 20s, I adopted Nikita from a girl that rescued her from a dumpster at a shopping mall. The pet store put her in there when she was still alive! She was a tiny little Siamese. The vet gave her steroids until she grew and gained some weight. She looked like a Burmese, so pretty. She was such a loyal loving cat. Some people in my family nick-named her "Nasty Nikita," but she was so sweet to me and my mom.

I've always had moggies! Siamese cats have never interested me. And bengals didn't either until Raiden showed up at my back door and peeked through the window in the door.

During my several month search for a TICA registered female bengal (my biggest stipulations, and I would not budge) I actually posted a wanted ad on both craigslist and kijiji in hopes a breeder might see them. Boy, I got several nasty emails calling me all sorts of names...."snooty bitch", "entitled cunt", was told I didnt deserve a "status symbol cat" because I was "incapable of love", and so on simply because I didnt WANT to adopt from a rescue or shelter. I specifically wanted a registered KITTEN. I wanted to watch her grow and develop, bond deeply with me, and be used to what goes on in our home. I didnt want an adult because who knows what vices they may have. They could be the sweetest thing in the shelter, and a complete nutjob at home. Ive seen that happen when I adopted a husky from a shelter as a teenager. Im 100% for adopting shelter animals... they need homes too....but in this situation it just wasnt for me.

I dont need to justify why I chose a professional breeder over a rescue to ANYONE. I got the kitten I wanted, and yes, I paid ALOT for her....so what?? I ADORE her. Shes been worth EVERY penny.

Everyone is entitled to a choice. If no-one bought from breeders, all the beautiful different breeds would gradually disappear. Which would be a real shame. Name calling is pathetic and smacks a little bit of jealousy to me.

Whilst everyone is entitled to an opinion they should also be tolerant of other people's opinions and choices.

Brian, when I typed that out afterwards I had in the back of my mind that you had a cat with rather large ears lol.

They are sooooooooo cute.

I saw a pic the other day of a tiny baby (4 weeks) Oriental and his ears were almost bigger than his head lol. Just too cute.

Oh I get that too from some of my friends. They can't believe that I would pay xxx amount of £'s for a pedigree and see it as a complete waste of money and 'over indulgence' on my part.

For me I don't have a moment's doubt. I loved Dexter and the short time I had with him is precious to me I will never forget him and the amount of money I 'wasted' as some people would look at it doesn't even enter my head.

My Burmese cats have given me so much love. I paid £300 for each of them 15 years ago! They both gave me 15 years of love, devotion and amusement. What can £300 give most people?

My motto is "live and let live." I've never understood why people can't respect other people's opinions and judgment. We are all different people -- no two of us are the same. I will not have the same opinion as someone else, but I have tolerance -- for many things, there are no right answers and no wrong answers. Everything is subjective as to how someone thinks and feels. Nobody owes anyone an explanation. It is what it is. On the internet, people can be anonymous and things they would never say to your face can be said on a website. You take it with a grain of salt and know they are expressing an opinion and it doesn't really matter what they think.
