Lately, my cat who is 2.5 years old and who I rescued 6 months ago has started hissing and biting at me.
It has happened 4 times now. It's scary! Our routine which only had a couple of bad nights has been great.
When we go to bed, I carry him to his room to go to sleep. Usually, he is sleeping on the stairs and I pick him
up and put him in his bed. I usually get a little grumble sometimes or if he is wide awake he will try to play and do the run away thing for
a bit. Sometimes he is a dead weight log and is so tired and there is no grumble at all. But, last night and 3 other nights in the last
2 weeks, he hisses and tries to bite. I wait a minute and try again and he is still upset. When I finally can put him to bed,
he is all lovey and purrs and kneads his bed. Anything you think I can do to stop this? We need to have him sleep in his room
so he isn't up all night keeping us awake. He does now sleep all through the night no problem. I never heard him hiss in 6 months and all of a sudden this just started.
Any advice or thoughts what could have started this?

He is obviously not happy about being put in his bed. I get growling from Raiden when I lead him away from something while we're out on our walk or I make him come back inside after an hour. I let Raiden sleep where he wants to sleep. Sometimes it's on his cat tree, sometimes it's on his blanket on the couch, sometimes it's on an ottoman, but most of the time he sleeps with us. He wakes me up in the middle of the night and I get up and feed him. I don't have a problem with that as I get up at least once anyway. Some people don't want their cats interrupting their sleep, but .... if I wanted uninterrupted sleep, wouldn't have a cat. Every cat I've ever had has woken me up at some point during the night.

Most cats prefer to choose where they sleep. If he's sleeping throughout the night, this shouldn't be a problem. It's also possible he's dreaming and you're interrupting that dream. He was probably chasing down a mouse and you woke him up before he caught it.

Cats hiss when they feel threatened. For one night, I'd just let him sleep where he is and see how he does. He's an adult cat and should be fine.

If it's important to you to have this routine, I would make sure there are some incentives for him in it, so that you change his perception of it being a bad thing to it being a good thing. It sounds like he already likes being there, so it shouldn't be a hard sell at all.

Make special treats part of the routine. He gets them when you put him down in his bed or at least arrives in his room. Perhaps you let him smell the treats when you go to pick him up so that he's in anticipation mode. You may even be able to train him, fairly easily, to run into the room on his own accord "when it's time" if the incentives are good enough. You could also make it a quickie play time in there if he is motivated by that.

I don't know why specifically he would hiss and bite. That could mean that there is some pain in the action you are performing (the way you are holding him, or picking him up, or something about his body is tender). I would look real closely for that. If touching him in any specific part of his body causes him to wince or pull back, or lash out. Or just moving your hand towards a specific part of his body causes that reaction (it could be something completely benign too like some cats hate being touched on the stomach or on the bottoms of their feet).

There is an outdoor kitty that I've befriended who comes around my porch pretty frequently. I learned that touching her near her hind quarters is a "no no", and I get smacked if it I do it. She instantly forgives, and loves being touched everywhere else, and adores and is always purry with me, but if you touch her there... WHACK!

My cats get into a nightly routine, and then they change where they want to sleep. Currently Grace is sleeping at the top of the tower in the kitchen. That leaves Blondie free to sleep in the bed with me. It has been a couple of weeks now that she has followed me into bed laid along side my head and rested her head on my arm. She stares at me and kneads the air with her paws until she falls asleep. I wake up and she is still there early in the morning. She usually exits the bed before Grace gets up so she is none the wiser and we have our secret alone time. Or possibly Grace knows and is not sleeping in my bedroom because of it.

I don't pick them up when they are settled down in the evening. I kiss Grace goodnight and I pet Blondie so she knows I am going to bed. Blondie follows me on her own.

Have you tried letting him just sleeps where he wants to recently? He might be fine. Our two bengals sleep soundly on our bed all night - though I know other bengals cause lots of ruckus during the night.
