Probiotic

Hi everyone,

I know some of you give your cats probiotics and wondered if there is a particular brand of probiotic that is best to use on a daily basis? I noticed Hendrix has diarrhoea again recently. He doesn't often use the litter tray indoors now as he started to go outdoors this year. I have a paste from the vet to give him for three days to settle things down, but I'm thinking that as I'm not sure what he is getting hold of outdoors and he has a sensitive tummy, it may be best to help him a bit with a daily probiotic.

Jagger is a bit more fussy about what he eats, and my main worry is that Hendrix is eating spoiled food that is left out for the foxes as he regularly comes in licking his lips! The foxes are a continued nuisance as they bring the food back through our garden and seem to think our garden is also a playground for them to charge around and fight over what has been put out for them, so I'm pretty certain there are bits of it scattered around he can get hold off!

Hi Claire, I have used Companion animals synbiotic D-C by Protexin veterinary www.protexinvet.com These are high quality concentrated probiotic and prebiotic. I phoned the company up as it just says suitable for companion animals. They said they were fine for cats. Seems to sort any problems with Oscar's tummy. It gets a bit runny when I give him broadline as he has a naughty habit of swiping the back of his neck and licking his paws so he ingests some of the liquid too :rolleyes:

Just looked on their website and the probiotics are in the suitable for cats section. They are capsules but I just pull them apart and sprinkle on his wet food. The pro-kolin may help him too?

The vet gave (sold) me FortiFlora made by Purina. Comes in individual packets that you sprinkle over the food. It must not have any taste as Raiden eats it fine! Thankfully, his poops are now hard and well formed! I don't know that I would give him a probiotic daily -- but might look into it since he's had some issues with diarrhea in the past, although they've all been caused by a parasite or bad bacteria. I'm sure I'd have less of a problem if we didn't go outside for walks. I stepped into someones poop yesterday (Raiden never poops outside) and it was a mess cleaning it off my shoes and making sure I washed it all off the deck so Raiden didn't have to step in it. I'm sure it was the b/w cat that seems to have taken up residence at my house.

My cats put anything on the floor into their mouth no questions asked. They also eat lizards and bugs outside on a regular basis.I give them a probiotic daily. I had stopped at one point and my vet told me to continue giving it to them daily so I do.

I used to use Holistic Select Digestive Remedies, Holistic Transition but I can no longer get ahold of it so they switched to Mercola probiotics for pets.

Our friends have a Siberian that needs a daily probiotic and they use FortiFlora as well.

She has a SUPER sensitive system, even the slightest change in her routine or food gives her gas and diarrhea. She loves the FortiFlora, when we watch her for them she always comes running when I sprinkle it on her food. She just gets a little sprinkle on her kibble 2x a day so one packet lasts a couple of days.

Thanks everyone! Will look into those as the paste the vet prescribed isn't going down well with Hendrix! I get the impression he thinks I'm trying to poison him. The protexinvet looks like it may be the way to go. Hendrix reacts to everything, he is super sensitive, whereas jagger is incredibly robust!

Oscar is a naughty boy, Melissa! Broadline has no effect on Jagger despite the fact he seems to be able to lick loads of it off, especially now I am applying on my own, there was loads along his back last time where he shot off as soon as I started to apply it! I don't know, these pesky bengals just don't understand we are trying to help them!
