Gaga Very Ill

Illnesses are so hard to control in animals. Brian, I am thrilled to know Gaga is home, but hate to hear the news that these seizures could possibly continue. I pray the medication helps, but making sure she gets the medication is the main thing (Raiden is notorious for not swallowing his pills even after holding his mouth closed and seeing the gulp). Until Gaga gets used to the medication, you may see these side effects. I'm sure you got no sleep last night either, but at least she is home with you.

There are pet steps that you can buy so Gaga can get up and down from the bed with no problem. They are actually really cute. Look for a collapsible kennel for Gaga. That way you can fold it up and put it away when you no longer need it. Poor baby has been through so much.

As for the specialist vet -- he must have flunked out of medical school to treat humans. Seriously, the vets that I have encountered are incredible doctors who spend the time needed with you and the patient and who return phone calls and are available to talk with when you need them.

I've been lucky enough to not have any pets with epilepsy but both my brother and mother have it and both have been on and off Phenobarb and other medications. It takes a while to balance out in the system but the side effects do lessen as the body adjusts. It's quite an "old" drug for treating seizures, it's been around a long time and it is still one of the most effective.

I'm sorry you've had such a bad experience with the specialist, some of them just have zero bedside manner :rolleyes:

I hope your regular vet feels confident enough to take over Gaga's care now that you know what the problem is. If not maybe they can recommend a specialist that is more personable.

Glad to hear things are going well, Brian! If this happened to Raiden, my vacation would be postponed! Or I would board him at the vet because I would not want to rely on a pet sitter to administer any medications -- and lately, several pets have gotten away from pet sitters and are "lost" in Nashville. I'm sure your vacation has been planned for a while and it may be difficult to enjoy it and have a great time worrying about Gaga.

In my last town there was a great vet office. They didn't board pets but they had a list of people that would go to your home and a couple of them were vet assistants from their office who were capable of giving medication and administering fluids. But you might be more comfortable having someone stay with your cats. A friend of mine pet sits in people's homes. Maybe you can find someone you trust to do that for you?

Having someone come and stay is a great idea, Jill. My worry is that twice a day isn't enough in the event something happens to Gaga. I wouldn't care what it cost to board her at the vet -- mainly because someone would check on her -- and I've boarded a previous cat that they kept in the hospital area rather than the cat room. I know a great pet sitter here in Nashville. I used her for a stray that I was feeding, but I would not trust her with Raiden. He'd escape and be one of those "lost" cats I read about every day. I had enough concerns when I boarded Raiden for a week when I traveled to Florida -- and he was fine, although I was on the phone to the vet daily to make sure he was doing okay. Vacations are to be enjoyed and stress free. I know Brian will do what he feels is right. Just want Gaga to be okay.

I just popped on here to have a little nose as I've had major surgery recently and my heart sank when I saw your post!

I couldn't get to the end quick enough to check that Gaga was ok.

SO PLEASED she is doing well.

Good Luck with Gaga's recovery and finding a sitter.

I had a thought, when my cat got rather old I built cat steps for her. Everywhere, to the top of the bookcase, my bed, even the kitchen counter.

Brian, I hate to hear that you're going through such a hard time in giving Gaga her medication. I know, I didn't like to syringe Raiden his meds, but he took them and we did fine with it. It might have taken me a few times of bringing him back up on the bathroom vanity counter to get them in them (there were two), but he was really good about it.

Glad you have found a great resort spa for Gaga when you have to travel. And a good pet sitter that you're confident in is so important. I'm sure it will all work out for you.
