... Any advice to make her not cry? We have tried a carrier (covering it with a blanket and not covering it), and letting her sit on our lap with a halter. Tomorrow we need to take her for a four hour trip and I hate her being so miserable. :( Last time she cried the whole way and didn't tire out.

Welcome to the world of cats where they do not enjoy car trips!!!!! Seriously, I've NEVER had a cat who enjoyed being in a carrier in a car. I will say that when we moved from Florida to Tennessee, our kitty did settle down after about an hour of crying and went to sleep. Normally, a cat gets a car ride for vet visits only. They tell you to start taking the cat for short rides. Some cats will get used to it. Other than that, turn up the music!!! Trust me, your cat will be fine. Hopefully, exhausted after crying for four hours. Our vet is 2 miles down the road and I've had enough of Raiden's howling in those 5 minutes to last a lifetime! LOL. He'll even howl in the waiting room unless there's a large dog there as well. It's just the cat's nature to cry when they are not really happy! I do the same thing.

Try playing soothing music. It can really effect a cat's mood.

Raiden loves Soundscapes from Music Choice! He's not crazy about rock 'n roll! LOL

Pixel just settles down and sleeps in the car.

Widget cries his little heart out. He hates it.
Soft music and talking to him regularly sometimes helps a little bit... but most of the time I just have to put up with him crying regardless of what I do!

I've always found it odd because normally Pixel is my scaredy cat and Widget is my big brave boy. Their roles are reversed when in a car! ;)

Soft music helped a lot!! Thanks everyone!
My husband (engineer) built her a car carrier... it is huge with two stories. It sits in our back seat from the ground to the top of the car. She is very quiet in that. She can stand on the top level and visit with us, and gets some privacy on the bottom level... it also connects to her litter box. I'll have to post a pic sometime.

Fun things happen when you have an engineer obsessed with his kitty :) Next month we are moving 8 hours away from our families, and so we will be taking lots of big trips with Onyx, and we want her to be comfortable.

These are just from his phone so they aren't super good...

On the left side there, under the second level, there's a door cut out with a latch that matches the opening to her litter box, which we can just place behind the carrier in our truck. The main door is on the right side.

The material for the project was vet approved. It was carefully measured so she can stand full length anywhere in the carrier.

Here she is sitting on part of the upper level from my husband's perspective in the driver's seat. You can kind of see in the bottom left corner where the litter box goes. She does use the litter box too through this design. I really need more photos :)

That is total genius!!! Great job. Probably didn't cost a lot of money and your kitty is completely protected. Great idea about matching up the doors so the kitty can use the litter box any time! In fact, Onyx looks quite content to be in there. Hope the move goes smoothly.

Thanks! It is a significant improvement over the carrier. :) It cost about $130 in materials but took about 30 hours of my husband's time, plus my dad, neighbour, mom and I helped too.
