I was wondering, and sorry if this has already been discussed but when bringing a kitten home, is there and preference as to which type of carrier to use i.e large or small, material or plastic? Just thought i would get peoples views on which was better (if there is a better option) thank you in advance guys and girls

Good question as we did it all wrong with the carrier as we bought it on the way to see the kittens and bought a small one in our hurry. This soon needed replacing as it only took up to 5kg and they are both over this weight now and it quickly started to look too small! Having said that, Hendrix loved using it as a bed when the top was taken off so we got plenty of use out of it! We now have two pretty large hard plastic ones with front and top opening. Again, Hendrix likes to use them as a bed so quite handy as they don't see the carrier and run knowing a trip in the car to the vets is imminent!!

I wasn't comfortable with the material ones as I wasn't sure the cat would feel safe without a stable base or side. But I'm sure they must be lighter to carry! The hard plastic just seems more secure and sturdy in my opinion - and can double up as a bed of course.

If I was starting from scratch again, I would buy a large one and put plenty of bedding in it to bring home the kitten so he isn't rolling around and is cosy and feels safe. And then he can grow into it, rather than you having to buy another one later on.

The best investment I made in a cat carrier is one that also has a top door. It's so much easier to get the cat in that way than through the front door. Don't worry about it being too large .... kitties tend to grow up.

Thanks for your feedback guys. I have been reading very conflicting views like they need plenty of room and then somewhere else say the smaller the better as they like to feel snug and tight. Think im going to have a look around.

They grow ever so quickly once you get them home, I had to replace the small carrier within 3 months.

I definitely recommend a large carrier and just put lots of extra bedding in to make a snug little nest for the kitten when you bring it home.

I love mine, it is made by pet gear. It is a backpack, arm bag, shoulder bag and you can roll it. You can clip it into your car as well as a car seat. Jinxy loves it. She sleeps in it even when we arent traveling.

I bought a small dog carrier then returned it before we went to get our boy. It just looked toooooo small. We ended up with a medium sized dog carrier - hard shell. Although, the 5 1/2 hours were just too long to listen to Quasar crying. I had a kitten harness for him and, after about 20 minutes of the drive, we stopped and let him out into the car in his harness and with a 6' leash attached so we could be sure that he did not crawl under hubby (driver)'s feet. This worked well.

He ended up sleeping on my lap or on the back seat for most of the trip. We had a litter box available that he never used.

A bonus was that he has never had an issue with wearing a harness. He does not enjoy having it applied but, once on, he seems not to even notice it.

We still use the carrier, occasionally, when we need a secure confinement for him, such as when we are inflating our hot air balloon. Other times, we have a collapsible dog kennel for him to hang out in.
