Had to rush Dexter to vet yesterday

As in a previous post I thought Dexter had started to spray but quickly realised it wasn't spray and that a clear jelly like discharge was coming out of his rear end.

His diarrhoea came back with a vengeance yesterday and has never been so bad. I spent all day washing and rewashing his litter boxes and him. He was also very lethargic, shivering although not off his food. We've had to move poor Dexter to a back room as it's the only room in the house that is not carpeted.

We knew this was just a continuation of the TF and rushed him to Vets. I took along the print off concerning the Ronidazole treatment that one of you kindly gave me a link to just in case I had any problems getting the Vet to agree to prescribe it to me.

I was/am pretty annoyed with the vet for not giving Dexter this treatment straight away and to add insult to injury had to listen so a preachy speech about the terrible health issues that Bengal's and other pedigree cats have, did I do my research before I got him etc etc :rolleyes:

In annoyance I told her that it was a pity Dexter hadn't been treated immediately with Ronidazole and she was miffed and told me she had been treating him. I really don't know what she was expecting to happen with the other two treatments she prescribed and as far as I'm concerned all this mucking about has just made my cat more ill.

Anyway he was given an immediate injection of Synulox and also Emprid Oral Suspension and Noroclav Chew Tabs to give him in the meantime whilst we wait for the Ronidazole to turn up.

Really sorry to hear Dexter is unwell again. At least you finally have the right medication, and once he's well again, maybe it will time to change your vet if you're still unhappy with her.

Good thing you caught what it was so quickly. Poor guy :(

I really feel for you about the vet. There is a vet tech at the clinic I bring Kai to who always talks crap about bengals and always asks if he's starting to spray or doing this or doing that because "bengals always do". She is extremely rude about it. It wouldn't be acceptable for a doctor to say that about different kinds of people, so I dont think the attitude is appropriate with a breed of animal either.

I really don't understand why you wouldn't switch vets quite frankly (after the treatment anyway). I mean they've demonstrated their incompetence, they don't have a good rapport with you or your cat, and you don't trust them. I wouldn't either! It's actually good that this happened with a relatively minor thing like TF, because this exposes them for what they are, and you have a better idea what to look for in your next vet. Supposing this were a life and death situation? *shutter*

I hope Dexter feels better soon! When you get the correct medicine I would also kindly ask for a copy of his records so you can make the switch when you are ready with the necessary paperwork in hand, assuming you can do that in the UK.

I have very little patience for vets (and doctors) that I don't like. If I don't feel comfortable with the vet guiding my health decisions for my cats, I could never forgive myself. You could probably call your insurance company and ask for recommendations for vets in your area too!

Hi Debbie

I think once the treatment is finished I would change vets, you clearly are not comfortable with them - and with good reason.

Petplan are very good at paying up, and you don't have to wait until the treatment is finished to claim as you can do follow on claims for the same ailment. I'm not sure if there are vets out there who will claim directly from Petplan, but I'm sure that if and when you find a new vet, they can request Dexters records from the previous vet.
