I love my Bengal, Zoomba. I love him probably more than any other cat I've ever had in my life. Having said that, I probably would not ever have another Bengal. Zoomba is soooooooo loud and wails constantly throughout the night. I have issues sleeping as it is so all his crying does not help. I would not trade him for anything in the world and I am so happy he came into my life, but I don't think anymore Bengal cats are going to be in my future, which is a shame because I love everything else about the breed. I just need to sleep!

I think it depends on the cat, ours can be vocal but mainly at meal times. We get the odd chirrup and things, but nothing I'd consider as wailing, and not through the night. However, it's early days for us yet. I think there might be a 'want' to go out into the big wide world, and from what I've read, once a bengal gets a taste for the outside world, they can be vocal because they want to visit it more and more.

Bengals are very vocal but not all of them are. BB only talks when she wants something, mostly when she wants someone to pet her. She well yowl at anyone that walks by without touching her  we all love it and think it's the cutest thing in the world. When we had Jasper he would yell the walls down all night, apparently we got used to it because he never woke us up.

Quasar is not very vocal. He gets excited (and loud) when he sees birds outside and he occasionally chatters back and forth with hubby but, otherwise, is relatively silent.

It may just be that this is just Zoomba's way and another Bengal would be completely different. My two only went outdoors from May this year and have limited access to the outdoors, they're not allowed out at night. They have never made a sound at night really - only if they are trying it on as they didn't want to go to bed or feel we are late getting up to feed them. They did sleep in the kitchen/conservatory, but as its getting colder we now let them sleep in the spare room or front room and shut our bedroom door and they are as good as gold (so far).

I'm not saying mine aren't vocal - they are and do love a chat or to let you know when they want something! I've even heard Jagger meowing his head off in the garden, chatting away to himself before now.

Can he see outside at all at night? There could be another cat or something doing its rounds that he can see and aggravates him?

I feel for you as I also need my sleep and don't always sleep well and wouldn't appreciate my two wailing at night!

Clare,
I hadn't thought about that but generally my living room curtains and blinds stay open all the time. Maybe I'll try closing them and see what happens.

I actually wish Diesel was a little more vocal. I had a Siamese that we lost last year and he was a big talker, I was hoping that Diesel would be too but he isn't.

If he's chasing a bug he makes all kinds of great little sounds, and when he's going to use the litter box he announces it with a few chirps but the only time he really talks is if he's shut in the bedroom and he hears my voice.

Donna I am with you. I love to hear them vocalize and I find it very entertaining to carry on a conversation with my cats  I have to say I miss Jasper a great deal but the thing I miss the most is his loud mouth lol. Maybe that's why we both got along so well, neither of us could be quite

Normally I am fine with Zoomba's howling and wailing. Most of the time I talk back to him. It's just a problem in the middle of the night when I'm trying to sleep.

Do you want to know what my husband does to sleep? He has to sleep with ear plugs in  he works nights so he sleeps when me and 4 kids are up and busy. On the days he is off he sleeps at night and still had to wear them because of Jasper. Apparently my children and I grew accustomed to his night time "talking" . My husband will ask me when I wake "how do you sleep through that?" I guess Jasper has made us evolve lol. I hear my kids if they sneeze but Jasper yelling never woke me

This is going to sound crazy considering your original post but.... get another cat. Doesn't have to be a bengal, but I bet your bengal would make less noise if he had company while you're sleeping. Worked in my house for sure.

Every cat is different. I've had cats who were quite nocturnal. Luckily, Raiden settles in for the night when it gets dark. He pretty much sleeps through the night -- on our bed. He will wake me up once for food and most of the time, he will come back to bed. There are times he will start his yowling. These days he cries because he wants to go outside for his walk. That's what quiets him down. Even if it's just for 15 minutes (since the temps are at freezing or below), he's happy when he comes back inside and he settles down. You might want to try and walk him -- or you wear his little tush out playing so that he's exhausted.

Yea, I probably wouldn't just accept that he wails and wakes you up. Maybe I'm naive about it, since I am a deep sleeper and have cats that I suspect are not quite as loud as some in the forum. But still, I think if you can establish a routine whereby your cat's needs are met prior to and during bedtime, and nighttime becomes his bedtime too, and it's established that him howling won't result in him getting anything that he wants, I think you can probably improve your current situation quite a bit.
