4 Month Kitten Lost Power Rear Legs

My first post.

I am proud daddy of a silver leopard bengal kitten, Mischa.

Mischa was born on 24th June 2014.

She is a lively little girl, very nosey and needs to be involved in everything!

She had her 2nd jag a week last Thursday.

On Tuesday morning she started struggling with her back legs, she can stand but her legs were shakey.

She tries to walk, slumps down on her bum or collapses to the ground.

Her legs are like if a human walked in tip toes with feet pointing inwards.

She was at vet on Tuesday, given an anti-inflammatory jag but no improvement.

On Wednesday she was at vets for 5 xrays, needed enema to clear her bowels, and for observation.

Xrays are all clear, no obvious fractures, no displacements.

Its 4 days on, she is curled up on my lap as i type.

She can eat, thankfully have a poo, purr, clean herself and she plays on floor with her toys.

Vet has been really good.

Vet believes its neurological.

She doesnt seem to be in pain, she just has no power in the rear legs.

She is an indoor cat.

There is no known accident or trauma.

Healthwise she has been fine other than a front wrist injury which cleared in 24 hours.

Just so confused, breaking my heart watching her try to walk.

Look for info on HCM - rear leg paralysis. I think what I am thinking of is aortic thromboembolism. I don't have any experience with it and am in no position to advise you one way or the other, but I wanted to gie you the bump. Good luck! I know there are other things that can cause leg issues and I hope your baby gets better!

Thanks for the replies.

My manager at work had found me a few links to sites showing issues can arise from the injection.

I raised this with Vet who has seen in past some complications but she doesn't believe this is the cause in this case.

Cats are known to have reactions to injections. However, if your vet seems to be stumped, then call in a vet specializing in neurology for animals. It may cost a bundle, but you want to see if you can reverse this. It would be terrible if this little kitty ended up with a permanent paralysis because of this. Good luck!

So maybe thats it? Can it be treated or is it something that is just managed? Thats sad but I'm sure she can have a happy life. Its amazing how cats can adapt.

Did you try the steroids? I had a bengal who had a heart condition, he had a blood clot and there was nothing we could do for him. We now have a bengal who has a form of neuropathy issue and we are giving him steroids. They are amazing. He went from not walking at all and less than a week later he is running and jumping.

Old thread bump, but I wanted to mention that Diesel had a bout of Bengal Polyneuropathy when he was a kitten and thanks to the advice here I pushed our vet to give steroids. It took a couple of months but he did get back to his crazy self. So crazy that he ended up with a torn ACL and meniscus that needed surgery :lol:
