Just curious what a healthy age to trim bengal kitty nails would be? My kittens are about 9 weeks old, their claws are tiny, but RAZOR sharp and I've already had a few pretty deep cuts.

I've kept myself from trimming them as I heard it's good for development to have claws and trimming could stunt growth. Does anyone have any good information on trimming? Are those risks significant and when can I trim their nails without affecting development?

Well, you can just trim off the short points or use soft paws. I wouldn't do a real trim on them. You're just trying to make the sharp edges a little dull. Too bad the cats won't sit still so you can just file them down! If you're really concerned, you can call your vet and ask them. Just know, they'll get sharp again and again and again and again. And kittens have razor sharp claws. Congratulations on your baby.

The sooner you get them used to even a tiny trim the better off you will be in the long run. You only need to trim the tip.

I really can't stress enough how important it is that they get used to the trims. My Bengal is fabulous about letting me trim her claws, one of my others hates it and will chew on them instead. I know they have to bother him but he won't even let me touch his toes, let alone push out his claw for a trim.

I agree that it's probably not too early to trim. But here's the thing: when a cat is used to having trimmed claws, then they grow long, you'll see him getting his claws snagged on things over and over. Conversely when a cat is used to having sharp claws and then doesn't, you'll see him do things like jump up on something, lose his grip, and fall painfully on his back. So consistency is definitely the key. When I was trimming my bengals claws (before I decided to abandon the effort) the only way I could really do it was when they were snoozing on their cat trees. And I could get maybe 2-3 nails in at a time before they "noticed" and started objecting. I've heard others say the same...

Thanks for the advice everyone.. I will probably try and trim the tips consistently!

My Bengal boy had his claws trimmed from a young age around four months so he is well used to it. I usually clip them once a fortnight as I just take off the very tip (curled bit) minimal amount so that's why it probably needs doing so often.
He is very good and I always do it when he is sleepy and relaxed and he gets a cat chew stick as a treat after. Better to start young.

I first saw my kittens when they were 5-6 weeks old and the breeder was already trimming their nails. So I continue this practice since the first week I have them
