There are a lot of wildfires burning here right in San Diego right now. So far i have not been impacted, but I have been thinking about evacuation with a bengal kitten and weimaraner. What works well as a travel or temporary litter box?

Anything really.
Make sure you take blankets (to throw over yourselves/pets) in the car if and when you evacuate, plus bottles of water.
Please ensure you evacuate well BEFORE the fire front hits, when you can see flames it's often too late.

I'd purchase a cheap rectangular baking pan -- even one that's disposable. Doesn't have to be gigantic or as large as your regular litter box. Most cats need a much smaller area. It would only be temporary for them.

I have heard about the wild fires and hope that you and your family are spared. It's always great to have an evacuation plan with everything that you need packed up and ready to run out the door. Those fires can change direction very quickly and you don't want to be fumbling around for things, so bowls, food, bottled water, spoons, plastic bags, litter box scoop, litter, blankets and bedding, carrier. For your puppy, you'll need a collar and leash, bowls, food, bottled water, etc. Just have everything in one spot so if you need to rush out, you've got everything ... including the pets.

Two summers ago, we lived quite literally in the center of a large number of wildfires. Multiple evacuations were occuring.

Hubby and I both worked 12-14 hour days. I prepared a kit with all the difficult/impossible to replace documents as well as medications and other necessities and kept it in the trunk of the car. I never allowed the gas in the tank to fall below 1/2. I was never certain if I were to leave for work that I would be allowed back home at the end of the day.

I also kept a 72-hour food kit in the car, including 4 1-gallon jugs of water.

For our dog and cat, I kept a litter box (storage box with lid) and bag of litter and litter scoop inside. I had canned, grain-free food for our cat (he normally eats raw) and a bag of our dog's food. I also kept leashes and harnesses, bowls and toys in the car.

At home, I had a smaller emergency kit that I kept right outside the back door so that, if I had a very short time to rescue the pets or had to have a neighbour or emergency worker rescue them, they would have the supplies they needed for a couple of days. In that kit were also phone numbers for me, my hubby and our vet, along with a brief introduction to our pets.

In the end, we got through the horrible, scary season without having to evacuate but it was reassuring to know that we were as prepared as possible to leave at a moment's notice.

Thanks for the great advice! It looks like we made it out of this one ok, but I want to be prepared for the future.

That is a scary thought. I guess we are lucky in the UK to not suffer with fires - just the horrendous flooding. I was shocked when I visited my friends in San Fran and the survival kits they carry in their cars. I hope you are all ok.

You could buy a normal plastic washing up bowl or two that will stack together. It will double up as a box to hold things like food and if you have two, the "dirty" one can be put on the bottom. If your cat is big or very messy with its litter I would buy plastic boxes that can also be stacked.

I would get your cat used to them in your home so that when you move in an emergency, it will be second nature to it.
