We bought a bengal kitten from a very reputable breeder and travelled a 12 hour trip to get him home which i understand would have been stressful for him so wen we got him home we left him in his own room with his nesecary bits and bobs but he hasnt yet used the litter tray hisses and growls at us and isnt to keen on sitting on your lap but he will tolerate it we keep visiting him regulaly will this all pass in a couple of day or r we going to have problems ??? please help also crying at night !!!!

Sounds like he his just settling in to me. Give him a few days and im sure he will be fine. Crying at night is pretty normal for the first few days i think as they miss their litter mates. Im sure he will be fine with lots of loves.

so as for the hissing and growling is that ok is he jus a bit scared we keep going into see him and cuddling him and stroking.. he hasnt used his litter tray though has eaten a little bit but havent seen him drink jus really nervous and jus want him to be ok and setttle in well so wats the best thing to do now jus keep going with him and hopefully he shud jus settle in!??? is this all normal he also hides in and under things !????

Hiya - welcome to the forum and I hope things settle down with your new addition. Is he shut in the room on his own for long at a time? I know some people feel a new kitten can be overwhelmed by having too much space at the beginning but when I brought mine home, I let them explore the whole ground floor straight away and opened up the rest of the house the following day. That way, they quickly got used to me moving around and hearing the noises I make but they were able to decide for themselves when they were confident enough to approach me. It worked for my lot and they settled in really fast. They're both very affectionate and love to be stroked but they don't sit on my knee very often and never really have.

no hes not in there for long on his own we go in every hour or so to give him a cuddle and stroke but wen we approach him he seems timidthe thing is we have 3 children so they r quite noisy so maybe after they have gone to bed i will let him into our front room with us for the evening and see how he is then did your kittens at you

Mine didn't hiss at me but I live on my own so maybe it wasn't such an overwhelming experience as your little guy has had with his long journey and several big humans around. They did hiss and growl when they came home from the cattery and also when they were spayed so I think it's a normal reaction from an unsettled Bengal. I don't think your little one is particlarly hissing at you, it's just an instinctive reaction to him being unsure of what's going on.

I think it would be a good idea to let him out for a while to explore when the house is quieter in the evening. Maybe try and play with some toys he can chase rather than trying to handle him too much - that way he'll associate you with play and I'm sure he'll soon come round.

He is probably scared all on his own (without mommy and siblings) in a strange place with strangers all around him. Relocating a cat is always tricky. I would think his hissing is probably him trying to make sure everyone knows he's capable of defending himself so nobody will mess with him since he doesn't quite know yet what to expect from you. Once he realizes you are his friends and provide food and entertainment, his hissing will probably stop.

I would suggest giving him some place to hide in where he can feel safe (e.g. a cardboard box with a towel inside and an access hole cut into the side) and allowing him some time to settle in and get used to you and your kids before letting him run through the rest of the house. I have two shy cats. Binky was just totally freaked out by additional space once I opened the door to his "safe room" to let him explore. It took him two nights before he came out and started exploring, one room each night at a time. After about two weeks, he was comfortable moving through the house, but it took a while.

Katie was very good at hiding and also reverted to being shy again once I let her out. She explored, alright, but her priority was to find the best hiding places. I didn't see her for days at times and had no idea where she was. It was scary, until I figured out where her hiding places were. I had just gotten her to the point that I could touch and stroke her while visiting her in the foster room, but after I let her out, it took more than a month again before she was comfortable enough not to run away and I could touch her again. She's fine now, but if I had to do it over again, I would introduce her to the rest of the house much more slowly.

when we brought Max and Freya home nearly 6 weeks ago - its seems like sooooooooooo much longer ha ha we let them have downstairs straight away, they came out of the dining room within 10 mins but only for a short while, it probably took a week before they ventured out properly. We did shut them in the dining room with all their required bits on a night time though for about 3 weeks, and i lent them (!) my wheat monkey (its a monkey with a wheat bag that you warm in the microwave) I think the added warmth helped them with leaving thier litter mates and Mum. an old item of clothing (not washed though it needs your smell on it to be effective) in their bed can also help them adjust to you.
Keep us updated - life now begins!

As the owner has not responded, this is the breeder responding. This little kitten started settling in within a couple of days and, from the last update last week (see below), has taken over the household and is great friends with the two children.

Quote "is doing really well has completely taken over the house and definitly owns us !! loves helping with the washing up ! very chatty and the most wonderful temperament excellent with the children.. if anything he leads them astray he he. we cant thank you enough for this superb little fella."

A scaredy kitten in the first couple of days is NOT an unsocialised kitten, just confused at the change. Please dont make assumptions about how breeders socialise their kittens unless you know that particular breeder.

Exactly! its totally natural for a kitten to be freaked out for the first day or two ( even a few weeks in some cases) in a new home. i have been fostering animals from our local Shelter for 6 years and they are always scared, confused and intimidated initially. it is in no way a sign of a poorly socialised animal! the poorly socialised ones are the ones that stay "unsocialised" over the long term! i took in a rabbit who had never been "badly treated" it had simply been ignored and not interacted with enough. it has taken almost a year until he was prepared to voluntarily come near me.

SO SO SO SORRY... i havent been watching this subject and didnt get a notification wen some wrote on here... he is the most beautiful cat i have ever owned.. gerry and sue have really produced the most stunning little boy he has a wonderful temperament and i think it was jus purely been moved around on a 12 hour trip... he needed just a week and he sttled in fine... after 2 weeks he was sure of where he was and well into the 3rd week he was the bengal charatcer i had read about for months before getting nemo !.... i think from a new owners point of view i would say to anyone who gets any sort of breed of cat that they jus need time to settle in and adjust and yes there are backyard breeders out there but gerry and sue certainly ARENT .. and i sincerely appolagise for not replying to this subject but i have aleady said i wasnt watching this subject and didnt realise there had been more posts
