Hi everyone, I have an 8-yr-old rescue Bengal. He was admitted to the hospital today for iv fluids and an ultrasound because he has been vomiting and not eating for days. A week or so ago we adopted a one year old female shelter kitty, as Em has a ton of energy and seemed friendly toward the cats in our building. However, he got depressed as soon as she came home, then vomited a lot and stopped eating. We separated them for the first couple of days like you are supposed to, and integrated them over the week. There was a bit of tension but no fighting, Em just seemed a bit down. So I thought this was stress related at first but it got extreme and by this morning he would respond, move, eat, or drink. The Docs don't know what's going on, and are doing some tests and getting fluids in him. Hr has had diarrhea in the past so IBS is a possibility, maybe pancreatitis. I just want him to be ok and am really scared. I'm blaming myself, thinking maybe adopting the other cat was a bad idea, but people told me to give it time and it would work out. I'm not sure what I'm asking exactly, maybe if anyone else has gone through this? Here are some pics of him too, he is so pretty and sweet! I lost a cat last year at exactly this time and am terrified I'm going to lose another :(

Hi so sorry your boy is unwell.

unfortunately 2 days simply isn't enough when introducing a new cat to the household esp a rescue cat with an unknown history in regards to any parasites or viral concerns. 14-21 days will cover all infectious disease and therefore limit any passing to any resident cats. I guess abit late to know that now but could help someone reading this in the future....
He is in the right place now, so am sure he will be just fine, normally a shot of anti inflams, extra fluids and antis are enough to help. Let us know how it goes x

Thank you so much for the reply. We got Em home last night. He seemed premier, and ate a bit. The new kitty is in a safe room and has been there since he came home. This morning he appears to have spiraled though. He had diarrhea and is listless. He did drink a little water. The vet did scans and everything seems normal. I am just terrified. Called hospital and if he remains lethargic he will have to go back. I just don't know what to do, am blaming myself. We are thinking of having someone take the new kitty to see if he improves when she is gone. I have never seen a cat act like this and just want him to be ok. Please, I could use prayers.

Thank you all very much. It is been touch and go lately. He is eating and drinking, but not enough. He will have a tiny bit of food each day, seems hungry but won't eat more than a little. I called the vet and shesaid it would be best to keep an eye on him and wait to bring him in because he did eat a tiny bit and the vet visits can be traumatic. I just don't know what is wrong. We are having the small cat fostered somewhere to see if it will help him improve.

He is going to get fluids and reevaluated today. Thanks for your words. I am scared and I'm also far away - luckily I have Angel friends who are caring for him until I return. It is horrible to be away.

Here is an Em update (btw, I've posted before - his name is officially Cayce, but his nickname is Em, or "Mr. M," so that's what we usually call him.

He is a tiny bit better, but in no way perfect. The small kitty is being fostered at a friend's to see if he improves, but it's now been over a week, and I'm not seeing the improvement I would like. He is now eating - a tiny bit. He pooed in the litter box this morning, so at least I know he's getting a little bit of nutrients and isn't in eminent danger. He has now been to the vet 3 times, and no one thinks there is anything seriously wrong with him. Here's the timeline so far:

Last Saturday and Sunday: tons of vomiting in the morning. Seemingly in response to smaller cat?
Monday: listless, unresponsive, and dehydrated. Trip to ER. Ultrasounds and blood panel taken. Nothing wrong, except for slight thickening of intestine, which 3 out of 3 docs still say is too minor to worry about IBD or other things for now. Blood totally normal.
Tuesday: seems better post-hydration, has anti-nausea meds and appetite stimulants.
Wednesday: back to not eating, or eating very very little.
Friday: after days of this, back to vet for IV fluids. Vet things this is extreme GI stress, intestines filled with gas. Gives 3 meds.
Saturday-Sunday: seems very improved, eating but appears to struggle a bit. Swallows a lot, still can't meow, not grooming. Took a long drink from the new fountain we bought him.
Monday: seems pretty good in morning, seems to not like chewing. Toward mid-day, seemed to crash big time. Back to tired, did not drink at all, though intermittently ate a bit of wet food when prodded. Called vet, said I could take drop him off to be monitored today.
This morning: He at a bit and used the litter box. Starting to worry about traumatizing him with so many vet visits. Have decided to monitor at home unless something looks really really off. Made an appointment for next week to see if he just needs time to destress and recovere.

Basically I have no idea what is going on, and it seems like the vet doesn't either (all 3 of them). Not sure what to do, if I should give up the tiny kitty because Em is just too fragile (this would break my heart), if I should watch and wait, or just keep taking him to the vet over and over.

I thought of that, too! The vet seems to think the swallowing is from nausea, and that he didn't see anything wrong in his mouth. I'm suspicious, though :(

I wouldn't worry about him being traumatised by vet visits, he is better at the vets or seeing a vet, than sitting at home undiagnosed IMO

Thanks, Elaine. The vet actually called today to check in, and we've made an appointment to take him in again tomorrow. He threw up this afternoon, clearish foamy liquid, and has lost a lot of weight. I'm going to bring a giant list of questions to ask this time.

Poor guy, that clear or yellow foamy vomit is from not eating  Make sure they check his teeth and gums too.

Oh gosh, this is so very sad. I'm sure Em is feeling miserable. Sometimes vets just overlook something ... maybe bring in a specialist. There is a reason for the vomiting, etc. and the sooner you find out the reason, the sooner it can be fully treated and Em can get back to normal. I know this isn't fun for you either. Sending hugs and prayers your way. Hope the little guy pulls through okay. Thanks for keeping us updated.
