So as some of you may know, Basil had struvite crystals for some time. It took quite a few months for us to rid him of them. After finally getting urine clear of crystals, he began having a urine behavioral problem. He favored a particular couch to pee on, no matter what I cleaned it with. We finally decided to trash the couch, and he seems a lot happier in that room now, actually!

Well, I'm getting a bit off track now. Vet was talking to me about strutive crystals, and how commonly male cats who do get these crystals are caused by high-protein diets and low water intake. She recommends him being on a diet that is not extremely high in protein aswell as encouraging lots of water drinking (I make sure to mix his wet food with 2 spoons of water, to make sure hes getting water since I never seen him drink it). Things Basil has been on in the past are Wellness, Taste of the Wild, and Evo- all which are listed as high-protein diets. So, I was wondering if you kitty experts can suggest for me a kitty food that is a well respected, healthier food, without the "high-protien" label?
I'll be the first to admit I'm not the best with label reading, and understanding all the ingredients in foods. So I want some advice.

Are you looking to stay with grain free food! I noticed your list was all grain free! I can honestly say that I have not seen a grain free food that isn't high protein :/ I know hills or science diet have some foods made specifically for that, but of course they are not grain free! I am sure there are others that are made with lower protein but I can't think of any other ones right off hand! I have to go to the pet store this afternoon to restock so I will look about and see what I can find! I am not sure we will have the same brands tho

She told me to be cautious of high-protien diets. Well I would prefer they be grain-free, but they don't have to be. I just want them to have something healthier. I actually have them on Science Diet right now (not grain-free, as you also mentioned)-because that is what the vet likes and uses, but I would like to put him back on something a little bit healthier. Plus he doesn't like science diet quite as much. If you do find something, definitely let me know! Thank you so much, That would be great! If you do find anything, maybe I can try to find it somewhere around here!

Everything I seem to find, that may have cranberries-which promotes healthy urine tract, or anything in general that I know is healthier, is high-protein. It's frustrating.

Sorry for bumping up this post (though it is not that old!) but I am now having the same issue.

My kitty Chilli is on her 3rd urinary infection since the summer. She is about to start a month of vet food (not sure which as I have not picked it up yet) before she is re-tested. The vet did say that if it becomes a recurring problem that she may have to use a preventative diet. I assume fromt eh vets point of view that this will be Science Plan or similar.

I would rather keep using non-medicated high quality kitty food if possible.

Did slbencke find a solution or does anyone have any ideas?
