exactly you should intervene in the great circle of life! If there are more birds thats more bird poop, more insects will be eating which definatley would upset the enviroment, more trees will be inhabited which couls also have an affect. Again i really dont think this guy has thought this through lol x

New Zealand is a special case, lots of flightless birds and rare marsupials some of which have little fear, so are easy targets for any prey driven carnivore like a cat.
The "circle of life" was deliberately mucked up in the mid 19th century by Europeans bringing outside predators to NZ, resulting in decimation of the wild life.

iv never actually seen a cat purposly kill a bird, unless it was already half dead on the floor

I have. Mine will kill anything that moves, we have a hedge that they sit below and grab the birds as they leave it. One cat came home with a partridge once, but I managed to save it, hopefully it survived.

Also I dont see any rats and never seen my cats kill any either!!

Just because you don't see rats, it doesn't mean there aren't any there. It doesn't matter where you live, you will almost certainly have rats nearby. They are very shy animals, and also very intelligent. Clever enough to avoid cats. Actually, I think they are fascinating creatures, and greatly misunderstood.

OF course there are rats! What I mean was Ive never seen my cats kill a rat, Ive seen birds and a duck (in my old boys youth he no longer hunts though) but my moggie boy has killed little mice (think it was a mouse/vole?) I managed to save one that he brought into the house!! It snuck INSIDE! The sofa for 3 days before finally just walking out bold as brass up to me like it was saying 'fine I give up!' So I just popped him far away outside! He then sat in front of me and munched some grass, didnt even run! I called him Cheeses

Also saved a few birds and had to call the rspca with a baby one he brought home, I like rats think they are pretty cool!
