So, Basil is a master when it comes to opening doors. If I'm out for long periods of the day I usually lock both of the kitties in my bedroom until I get home because Basil can even open up the kitchen cupboard, and when super bored, Basil LOVES to and will purposely knock glasses onto the floor and the fear of him doing that while I'm not home to clean it up terrifies me.

Because he's able to open my bedroom door with ease, and I do not have a double lock I usually have to prop up something underneath the door handle to secure the door handle. Well, he's figured out how to push the bedroom doorhandle down enough to knock down the propped object and escape from the bedroom anyway.

Finally thinking of a brighter idea (which I wish I thought of sooner) I decided to reorganize all my cupboards so that all the plastic dishware is in front of the glass dishware just so if Mr. SmartyPants does decide to go into the cabinets and decides to knock something over, it will be plastic instead of glass.


SO today, When I came home my roommate sat me down and told me she had to tell me something. She told me she came home earlier to the front door of our appt wide open and saw both kitties sitting out on the steps of our appt, and dashed back in the front door when they saw her running up the stairs to pick them up.

I 100% always lock my house door. Everyday, after I turn my car on I also walk back up the stairs to check again that the door is locked because that is just one of those things I am very particular about.

Basil has gotten out the front door a couple times, but in the past it has been when 1. one of us has been home and 2. it was unlocked at the time he opened it. They never go far either, just sit on the steps and sniff around. its like they just open the door to say "HAHAHAHA LOOK WHAT I CAN DO MOM. SILLY DOOR, I CAN OPEN THAT."

So Does this mean I may have a serious escape artist on my hands? Perhaps he unlocked it by accident if he was fooling around with it too long? I don't know. Will I ever? *sign* Either way, this is one of those days where you have to remind yourself to stop by the hardware store soon and find some new doorknobs- perhaps the round turning ones will do the trick.

We have round handles on all our doors and all exterior doors are kept locked at all times using a key operated lock that can't be opened unless you physically put the key in the lock and turn it because all of ours know how to open doors and have been caught sneaking out of the front door on two separate occasions when it was unlocked They also know how to open the kitchen cabinets and the fridge lol so I keep the kitchen door shut now.

Mine can open kitchen cupboards and I cam home the other night to find two of their food bowls smashed on the floor as they've pushed them out of the cupboard onto a tiled floor. And then proceeded to eat half a bag of dried food and a bowl pouch of treats!
I've got to child lock a few cupboards - anything like that you can do to yours?

yup, honey can open doors. I was making the beds, after having honey for about 5 weeks. All went quiet and I couldn't hear my youngest son, so I came downstairs to see what the quiet was all about. Both rori and honey were sitting on the garden table, with my youngest son, eating mud

Honey was sitting there, licking her paws, as if to say "wat up"

She can open doors with push down handles, she has scared the crap out of friends before. Us watching scary films, lights off, then WHAM (greatly timed, i should say), the door makes a massive thud sound and slowly creaks open. Makes me chuckel

She is always opening cupboard doors, climbing in and settling down for a nap.

I use child locks on the cupboards and leave 1 cupboard for her to climb into. It's the 'honey cupboard', with a named template on the front. Friends think it's my naughty cupboard, until I tell them otherwise

Rori will climb out the windows on my first floor, do the mission impossible walk along the very small ledges, climb up the drain pipe, onto my roof 3 times now, we've had to call the fire brigade out, to get her down good job they are only around the corner lol So I now have the windows on safety latches. She's not figured the opening door trick, just yet thank god!

I thought my garden was relatively secure. Unfortunately Oscar proved me wrong by ending up on my neighbour's roof..... after scaling a trellis onto a window ledge, onto the roof. Thankfully I managed to coax him into my bedroom window (we have 2 tier rooves, as most of my terrace have lower extensions on the back as they were built in the days before indoor bathrooms, so we've all had to add them on later).
