I have a question that I have been meaning to ask for a while.

I think Siamese are gorgeous... However I prefer the Siamese that have a really long face and the ones that have an athletic body and short fur. the ones I like seem to be GIANT as well.

Some Siamese I have seen look like normal cats with siamese colouring. Can anyone tell me the genetic difference and if they have a different name. Here is a link to the Siamese that I LOVE

The Siamese you like is the newer more 'trendy' look that breeders go for with a pronounced wedge and wide placed (bat like) ears.

I believed they have just evolved to look more angular through selected mating.

I used to own a Siamese growing up, so my feedback here is solely based on personal experience and various tidbits I've read here and there...

The Siamese you're talking about is called a Modern Siamese cat, as opposed to the fuller looking traditional siamese or thai siamese (Applehead Siamese as mentioned by lollo2304)

However, I would say either of them is a giant cat. Other pointed breeds like the Ragdoll can grow to enormous sizes but they are a crossed with other pointed breeds as well and have a medium length fur. Like Hemingway below

I wouldn't expect there to be many behavioural differences between the two varieties.

In general, the siamese are a very vocal cat breed (It'll converse with you if you can decipher what it's trying to say) that'll love to be right in the middle of the action. They'll gladly follow you around the house like a little dog and really don't do well being left alone for long periods of time.

My Neytiri is an Oriental Shorthair (basically a "colored" Siamese... except that she has the classic siamese coloring anyway ). Oriental shorthairs have the siamese heritage, all the siamese behaviors, and I believe that is the look that you like, but are cross-bred to achieve lots of cool colors and patterns.

She is a really really fun cat. Really big personality. She's the "evil mastermind" of my threesome of cats. She's very cuddly, always all over me, purring and "talking". She explores all over, is super-inquisitive, and into everything. She's also very active and playful, although definitely lacks the Bengal's athleticism. She also does real well with the bengals. They play rough, and she sometimes cries and complains, but then next thing you know, there she is sleeping with them, or pouncing on them to start up another game.

I had never seen an Oriental before, but a friend of mine recommended them to me which got me interested. I can't imagine not having an Oriental from now on

Some of the modern Siamese can look a bit too extreme IMO but I do love the big ears. I think Neytiri is a gorgeous example of a modern oriental/Siamese without being too exaggerated. I prefer the Tonkinese breed on the whole as I've seen some very extreme examples of Siamese. I wonder if they were crossed back with a tonkinese they may retain a more moderate wedge & better looks but keep their bat like ears I suppose it's all down to personal taste really. I always prefer the leaner looking bengals on here that have oversized ears, which I know is a fault but hey! It's very wrong to breed the siamese with such an exaggerated wedge if they're having nasal problems etc though.

Yes I agree, I do love leaner looking cats. That's why I like Tonks and Siamese.
I do like the wedge heads though and the huge bat ears : )

My old neighbor had 2 Siamese and 2 Burmese, the Siamese were the bosses, esp the female Siamese, crossed her path and you knew about it
