Bene came from the breeder as "Uri" which he was responding to well, but, I wanted him to have a more multi-lingual name (I'm an American expat in Poland so I wanted something that could be said in a heavy American accent or in a heavy Polish accent and still be understood by him). To teach him, when I fed him I would just pet him and repeat his name over and over. Same thing when he "catches" his favorite toys when we play. I'm not quite sure he understands that it's his name on the same level you or I understand it but he associates it with good things, so he regularly comes when I call, or if he's distracted, he at leasts tilts his head and lets out a meow.

Ours are 5 months old now and just starting to look at me when I call their names..
Their breeder very cleverly teach all their cats and kittens to come to 'a click of the fingers'..
for a small treat ie ham/prawn..

you should see them fly to your feet shouting their heads off!!
excellent should they get out...

I can't remember where I read it (probably on here somewhere) but if you use names that end in an "ee" sound they respond better. I know when we call Indiana he responds better when we call Indy instead.
