I would be interested to know if anyone has erected any window screens to stop their cats escaping from windows. My recent tragedy with Lily has made me look at something like this. I found a website for cataire screening which looks good. Has anyone had experience of them? or something similar.

You'll probably find a few US based websites where it's common to keep cats indoors due to critters being outside - less common here in the UK, but you could probably make something up yourself, only question is what material would be strong enough to hold back a Bengal!

We (Read "I") made some simple ones out of chicken wire, roofing batten * some simple "L" brackets from Screwfix.com.

We dont have "top vent, but our whole windows are hinged from the top, so the screen needs to be the full lengh of the window..........I admit they are not pretty, but it means the house can get some fresh-air without the littln's making a run for it.....

Window screens are typical in North America (US and Canada alike)
but in Britain they haven't caught on. Until recently. There has been an increase in insects and fewer people are willing to put up with them in their homes any longer.

Many window companies are catching on to this and offering "American" style windows/window screens now. Our local company is and that is what we're going to do. It's expensive to replace windows but fortunately we're due for it, so we're getting a new back door with screen built in and kitchen windows as well. That way we can air the house without worries.

(these built in screens are usually used in conjuction with sash style windows and windows that open inward.)

We just bought some garden fencing from the local DIY superstore. It's the sort that comes in unbendable squares.

We cut it to size with wire cutters and used a couple of screws to secure it just inside the plastic window frame. It is in two parts and the top part is smaller and not fixed but just held onto the bottom part with cable ties.

The window will shut on it's catch but to shut it fully we would have to remove the whole thing. But then our living room is upstairs so no one can get in and we like to let a bit of air in anyway.
